Alex与Aaron都是在San Fernando Valley当地与附近长大的。这对搭档会相遇，是因为几年前年纪稍长的Aaron开始和Alex的姐姐约会。有次Aaron撇见了Alex摆在家里的吉他，便忍不住好奇了起来。“我问他姊他弹得好不好，她说很好。她告诉我的时候Alex才十五岁，我说，‘喔！别扯了！’可是一旦我听到他唱歌，我明白他的歌声确实是独一无二的。Alex回忆说：“我姐姐最后跟Aaron说，‘你到底是要和我弟玩音乐还是要和我约会？’好吧，我们现在还是在一起玩音乐。”青春期的活力与坚持终于有了代价。一个RCA唱片的A＆R发掘了他们俩，一开始只是鼓励而已，但后来则是发展成一纸真正的合同。之后的几年给了两人充裕的时间去组织一个完整的乐队，而他们也开始在南加州的音乐圈里四处表演。“我们的第一个乐队叫做Generation Gap，”Alex回忆道。“我们是从分类广告"Recycler"上查找团员的。我们的第一个鼓手有五十八岁，贝斯手也有四十岁，我们觉得这样很酷。”
