别看"罗伊"骗无不胜的丰功伟业，其实他私底下竟是个患有精神官能疾病(强迫症)的家伙，"尼可拉斯凯吉"诠饰起发病的模样简直出神入化，难度比「兰花贼」时更高了，如果奥斯卡评审是公平的，应该要让他连庄入围，比较可惜的是我看不出官能疾病与骗徒间有何必然关联，只是一个骗徒刚好患有官能症罢了，但是这赋予观众机会用比较私人的角度来重新衡量骗徒的行为，我就十分同情"罗伊"想当个好爸爸却又深觉自己不适任的心境。
至於影片中另外两位灵魂人物，演技方面也都交出了漂亮的成绩单，罗伊的徒儿法兰克(山姆洛克威饰)与他感情真是好到没话说，两人默契十足情同手足，只是法兰克对罗伊表达尊敬的方式竟然是"青出於蓝更胜於蓝"，毫不谦虚，这颇令人玩味。"山姆洛克威"的演技足以取代任何一部"爱德华诺顿"演出的痞子角色，例如「赌王之王」、「鬼计神偷」等，至於饰演女儿的"艾利森罗曼"，层次分明的演出也让人刮目相看，既然她对台湾观众还算是处女秀，不得不说她最厉害，因为她还骗到了观众的眼泪。
「火柴人」是一部十分关注在角色身上的电影，令人向往骗徒的生活方式，因为他们能够如此游戏人间游刃有余。本片并不世故的进行道德劝说，因为本来就螳螂捕蝉，黄雀在后，没有什麼好责怪的，但是它让我们重新思考什麼才是真正值得重视的价值，唯有失去一切才开始懂得学会珍惜
