然而他是个毫无经验的新手，羡慕著蔡斯的捕鲸技巧与人气。波拉德、蔡斯与十多名船员，当中包括14岁的尼克森，他们乘着埃塞克斯号捕鲸船向着南太平洋进发，为的是猎杀鲸鱼而获取大量的鲸鱼油。在大西洋航行期间，波拉德跟蔡斯因意见不合而发生冲突，

导致埃塞克斯号遇上风暴，让船身受损。波拉德要求返航，并打算让蔡斯承担所有过失的责任，但蔡斯提出以鲸油的价值核心为目标，不能在没有利润返回港口，使他们的声誉蒙受损失，后来双方同意放下他们的分歧，继续航行。很快，众人捕猎到他们的第一头公的抹香鲸。

随后三个月过去了，他们再没有鱼获，波拉德意识到大西洋是没有鲸鱼的。埃塞克斯号经过合恩角航行到太平洋，以希望能幸运的找到一条。在厄瓜多尔的阿塔卡梅斯，众人遇到一名西班牙船长，他告知众人指自己跟他的船员们在西边2,000英里的死海上发现丰富的“收获”，

但他指一头凶猛的复仇“大白鲸”把他的船摧毁，把他们当中的六人杀掉。波拉德否认这个故事，只当作一个神话看待。波拉德及蔡斯带着众人到西边远征。他们发现那不受干扰的地方，但当他们放下捕鲸艇的时候，一头巨大白化的公抹香鲸向他们作出攻击，把船严重摧毁。蔡斯从埃塞克斯号的甲板上挖出鱼叉，但巨鲸把埃塞克斯号砸成两半，造成两名船员死亡。

众人只好把埃塞克斯号弃掉，乘坐三艘完好的捕鲸艇逃生，在仅非常有限的资源下航行至数百英里的对岸。由于航程遥远且缺乏食物和食水，漂流十多天后众人都饥渴和劳累得不成人样，巨鲸还跟随着他们并继续攻击，二副马修·乔伊还身染重病。

直到在死海上漂流了90天后，一艘经过的船把波拉德的艇救起，然而蔡斯的艇继续在没有食物或水的情况下漂流。最后，众人濒死时，他们到达了陆地 —智利的一个有人的岛屿因而获救。
