Ray

Slang
“Your albums are going through the roof!”

go through the roof

If something goes through the roof, it is a way of saying that it exceeds expectations. This is usually said in reference to prices and money.

1. Ticket sales have gone through the roof. I’m sure we will sell out.

2. Gas prices are going through the roof! I think it’s better to take public
transportation.

Classic Clips

“Totally state of the art.”

state of the art

If something is state of the art, it means that is the newest and best that is available. Usually, this is in reference to technology. The most recent technology that is the best that exists is “state of the art.”

1.These cars are all built with state of the art engines.

2.That's my stereo system over there. It's not state of the art, but it still works pretty well.

“Tom Dowd built an eight-track mixing console, two recorders, the works.”

the works

If something has the works, it means that it comes with all the possible
additions and extensions. For instance, if you want a pizza with “the works,” you want it with all the toppings that are available.

1.I’ll have the chocolate sundae with the works.

2.This job is a great set-up. It provides several vacations, good pay, nice car, mobile phone, the works.

Norrington: Keep your guns on him, men. Gillette, fetch some irons. Well, well... Jack Sparrow, isnt it?
Jack: Captain Jack Sparrow, if you please, sir.
Norrington: Well, I don't see your ship...Captain?
Jack: I'm in the market as it were.
Private1: He said he'd come to commandeer one.
Private2: Told ya he was telling the truth. These are his, sir.
Norrington: No additional shots nor powder. A compass that doesnt point north. And I half expected it to be made of wood. You are, without doubt, the worst pirate I've ever heard of.
Jack: But you have heard of me.
Elizabeth: Commodore, I really must protest.
Norrington: Carefully Lieutenant.
Elizabeth: Pirate or not this man saved my life.
Norrington: One good deed is not enough to redeem a man of a lifetime of wickedness.
Jack: Though it seems enough to condemn him.
Norrington: Indeed.
Jack: Finally.
Gov. Swann: No, no! Don't shoot!
Jack: I knew you'd warm up to me. Commodore Norrington, my effects, please. And my hat. Commodore! Elizabeth, it is Elizabeth, isn't it?
Elizabeth: It's Miss Swann.
Jack: Miss Swann, if you'd be so kind. Come, come, dear, we don't have all day. Now if you'll be very kind. Easy on the goods, darling.
Elizabeth: You're despicable.
Jack: Sticks and stones, love. I saved your life, you saved mine, we're square. Gentlemen, milady. You will always remember this as the day that you almost caught...Capitan Jack Sparrow.
Will: You're the one they're hunting. The pirate.
Jack: You seem somewhat familiar. Have I threatened you before?
Will: I make a point of avoiding familiarity with pirates.
Jack: Ah. Well, then it would be a shame to put a black mark on your record. So, if you'll excuse me. Do you think this wise, boy, crossing blades with a pirate?
Will:You threatened Miss Swann.
Jack: Only a little. You know what you're doing, I'll give you that. Excellent form. But how's your footwork? If I step here...Very good. Now I step again. Ta.
1. In the market
In the market 意为"Wanting to possess, eager to have, seeking",表示想拥有的东西时,用for 接名词表示,例如:The crowd was in the market for more entertainment.
2. Half expect
And I half expected it to be made of wood.
3. Warm up to
Become friendlier or more receptive toward",例如:I had a hard time warming up to my mother-in-law.
4. Sticks and stones.
Stick and stone may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.
5. Make a point of
意为"Treat something as important or essential",例如:She made a point of thanking everyone in the department for their efforts.
6. Ta

Rise and shine!
ants in one's pants
