当时卡洛斯·葛戴尔刚和女朋友分手非常痛苦，于是把他身上所有的钱都去赌了马。本来他买的马一马当先，但在最后时刻却被第厅余二匹马所超过。而且只比他买的马领先了一个马头。作者当时的失意、颓废的不易言表的。

于是一气呵族首成写成了这首《PorUnaCabeza》，中译名为《只差一步》。有人说这首曲子之所以叫《只差一步》，是因为如果伴着这首曲子跳探戈的话，永远都差最后一步（意为“永远跳不够”），但如果完全按照直译的话应该叫《只差一个马头》。
