THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION is a strong debut for director Frank Darabont, a screenwriter who sold the script on the provision that he could direct it. This isn't a Film For The Ages, but it is involving and engaging for the majority of its 150-minute running time. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are both fine as convicts who meet in Shawshank Prison in the late 40's and get to know each other as they do time together. The suspense mainly revolves around 1) whether Robbins will continue to survive prison life; and 2) whether he should be there at all. The script does a decent job of sustaining these elements and keeping the viewer in doubt. On the other hand, there are few moments in the story that, once they are revealed, are different than you might expect. For the most part, the satisfying option is usually chosen, the one that will make the audience happy. While this makes for an enjoyable immediate experience , the side effect is that the lack of genuine surprise makes it less enring than you'd like. On the whole though, aside from script weaknesses and implausibilities (more than a couple), the performances are uniformly strong, if a bit two-dimensional in spots, the period feel of the art direction is thorough yet understated, Thomas Newman's score nicely supports things and is emotional without being too overpowering or treacly. For a prison drama, the violence isn't played up particlarly, but this ain't FREE WILLY, either. For the curious, SHAWSHANK makes for a good night out, as the saying goes. If the concept doesn't grab you from the start, I don't know that it would win you over. Marginally Recommended. 天涯：洛杉矶奇迹——————是这位仁兄的！

一次，安迪和另几个犯人外出劳动，他无意间听到监狱官在讲有关上税的事。安迪说他有办法可以使监狱官合法地免去这一大笔税金，做为交换，他为十几个犯人朋友每人争得了3瓶啤酒。喝着啤酒，瑞德说多年来，他又第一次感受到了自由的感觉。
由于安迪精通财务制度方面的的知识，很快使他摆脱了狱中繁重的体力劳动和其它变态囚犯的骚扰。不久，声名远扬的安迪开始为越来越多的狱警处理税务问题，甚至孩子的升学问题也来向他请教。同时安迪也逐步成为肖申克监狱长诺顿洗黑钱的重要工具。监狱生活非常平淡，总要自己找一些事情来做。由于安迪不停地写信给州议会，终于为监狱申请到了一小笔钱用于监狱图书馆的建设。同时，安迪为了展现音乐的魅力，让更多人了解，冒着被处罚播放了一段音乐，并送给瑞德一个口琴。
一个年轻犯人的到来打破了安迪平静的狱中生活：这个犯人以前在另一所监狱服刑时听到过安迪的案子，他知道谁是真凶！但当安迪向监狱长提出要求上报这一情况以争取重新审理此案时，却遭到了断然拒绝，并受到了单独禁闭一个月的严重惩罚。为了防止安迪获释，监狱不惜设计害死了知情人！
面对残酷的现实，安迪变得很消沉……有一天，他对瑞德说：“如果有一天，你可以获得假释，一定要到某个地方替我完成一个心愿。那是我向我妻子求婚的地方，把那里一棵大橡树下的一个盒子挖出来。那里有我给你的东西。”当天夜里，风雨交加，雷声大作，已得到灵魂救赎的安迪越狱成功。
原来二十年来，安迪每天都在用那把小石锤挖洞，然后用海报将洞口遮住。同时，因为他对经济聪明的头脑，典狱长一直让安迪为他做黑账，洗钱，将他用监狱的廉价劳动力赚来的黑钱一笔笔转出去。而安迪将这些黑钱全部寄放在一个叫斯蒂文的人名下，其实这个斯蒂文是安迪虚构出来的人物，安迪为斯蒂文做了驾驶证，身份证等各种证明，可谓天衣无缝。安迪越狱后，用斯蒂文这个化名，以斯蒂文的身份领走了部分监狱长存的黑钱，用这笔不小的数目过上了不错的生活。并告发了监狱长贪污受贿的真相。监狱长在自己存小账本的保险柜里见到的是安迪留下的一本圣经，扉页上写着：“监狱长，您说得对，救赎就在里面。”当看到里边挖空的部分正好可以放下小石锤时。监狱长领悟到其实安迪一直都没有屈服过。而这时，警方正向监狱赶来逮捕监狱长，最后监狱长饮弹自尽。
瑞德获得了假释，他在橡树下找到了一盒现金和安迪留给他的一封信后，决定违反假释规定，寻找自由。便动身去芝华塔内欧。两个老朋友安迪和瑞德终于在墨西哥阳光明媚的海滩重逢。

贯穿全线的“三次救赎”
redemption，救赎，并不只是andy本身，从某种意义上来说，他不但拯救了自己，也拯救了他的狱友。他对狱友的拯救，表现在一种精神上的拯救，因为他一定程度上使他的周围的人明白了，追求自由和希望的可贵－－red就是其中一个典型。两个对自由持有一样的寄望，但有着不同态度的人，构成 了全片的主线。三次“redemption”如下：
第一次是他帮助狱警HADLEY逃税，为狱友赢得每人3瓶啤酒的奖励。 “We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders, and felt like free men. We could'a been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the Lords of all Creation.”... “You could argue he'd done it to curry favor with the guards. Or maybe make a few friends among us cons. Their feathers are just too bright...”到最后他打开盒子，决定到 Zihuatanejo找他的朋友andy，说出内心最后的独白： “I find I am so excited I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION is a strong debut for director Frank Darabont, a screenwriter who sold the script on the provision that he could direct it. This isn't a Film For The Ages, but it is involving and engaging for the majority of its 150-minute running time. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are both fine as convicts who meet in Shawshank Prison in the late 40's and get to know each other as they do time together. The suspense mainly revolves around 1) whether Robbins will continue to survive prison life; and 2) whether he should be there at all. The script does a decent job of sustaining these elements and keeping the viewer in doubt. On the other hand, there are few moments in the story that, once they are revealed, are different than you might expect. For the most part, the satisfying option is usually chosen, the one that will make the audience happy. While this makes for an enjoyable immediate experience , the side effect is that the lack of genuine surprise makes it less enring than you'd like. On the whole though, aside from script weaknesses and implausibilities (more than a couple), the performances are uniformly strong, if a bit two-dimensional in spots, the period feel of the art direction is thorough yet understated, Thomas Newman's score nicely supports things and is emotional without being too overpowering or treacly. For a prison drama, the violence isn't played up particlarly, but this ain't FREE WILLY, either. For the curious, SHAWSHANK makes for a good night out, as the saying goes. If the concept doesn't grab you from the start, I don't know that it would win you over. Marginally Recommended.

Later, under the pretense of a cell inspection, Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton) meets with Andy and reassigns him to the prison library, to assist elderly inmate Brooks Hatlen (James Whitmore); a pretext for Andy to manage financial ties for the prison. His advice and expertise are soon sought by other guards at Shawshank and from nearby prisons. Andy begins writing weekly letters to the state government for funds to improve the decrepit library.
In 1954, Brooks is freed on parole, but unable to adjust to the outside world after 50 years in prison, he hangs himself. Andy receives a library donation that includes a recording of The Marriage of Figaro. He plays an excerpt over the public address system, resulting in him receiving solitary confinement. After his release, Andy explains that he holds onto hope as something that the prison cannot take from him, but Red dismisses the idea. In 1963, Norton begins exploiting prison labor for public works, undercutting the cost of skilled labor by skimming the profits and receiving kickbacks. He has Andy launder the money using the alias "Randall Stevens".
In 1965, Tommy Williams (Gil Bellows) is incarcerated for robbery. He joins Andy and Red's circle of friends, and Andy assists him in getting his GED. In 1966, after hearing the details of Andy's case, Tommy reveals that an inmate at another prison claimed responsibility for an identical murder, suggesting Andy's innocence. Andy approaches Norton with this information, but the warden refuses to listen. Norton places Andy in solitary confinement and has Tommy murdered by Hadley under the guise of an escape attempt. Andy refuses to continue with the scam, but Norton threatens to destroy the library and take away his protection and preferential treatment. The next day at roll call, Andy's cell is empty. Enraged, Norton throws one of Andy's rocks at the poster of Raquel Welch which tears through, revealing a tunnel that Andy had g with his rock hammer over the previous two decades. The previous night, Andy escaped through the tunnel and the prison's sewage pipe with Norton's ledger, containing details of the money laundering. While guards search for him the following morning, Andy, posing as Randall Stevens, visits several banks to withdraw the laundered money. Finally, he sends the ledger and evidence of the corruption and murders at Shawshank to a local newspaper. The police arrive at Shawshank and take Hadley into custody, but Norton commits suicide to avoid arrest.
After serving 40 years Red receives parole. He struggles to adapt to life outside prison and fears he never will. Remembering his promise to Andy, he visits Buxton and finds a cache containing money and a letter, asking him to come to Zihuatanejo. Red violates his parole and travels to Fort Hancock, Texas to cross the border to Mexico, admitting he finally feels hope. On a beach in Zihuatanejo, he finds Andy, and the two friends are happily reunited.
