阿甘的妈妈靠出租房屋为生，于是阿甘经常和形形色色的房客混在一起。他喜欢衡链扒随着一个小伙子的吉他 节奏姿态怪异的扭动身体，而不久之后，母子俩在电视里发现这个男房客竟成了大名鼎鼎的猫王 。 在学校的校车 上，阿甘见到了他一生中认为最美丽的女孩 --珍妮。从此两人形影不离。阿甘无时不刻的保护着珍妮，却对惹火烧身的麻烦无能为力，而此时珍妮便会向阿甘大喊：“快跑！阿甘快跑！”感谢上帝 眷顾着阿甘，因为赐予了他一双健步如飞的长腿，总能将身后的恶棍甩得无影无踪。 就这样，阿甘跑进了大学 的橄榄球 场，他被大学破格录取，成了球场上最善跑的明星 ，并受到了肯尼迪总统 的接见。在大学里，他目睹了美国法令准许黑人 学生进入白人 学校就读的经过。不久之后，曾接见他的肯尼迪总统遇刺身亡。

拿到大学学位后的阿甘在一名新兵的鼓动下参军 入伍。在军营里，阿甘被教官誉为智商达到160的最聪明的士兵，因为上帝还赐给他一个单纯正直，不存半点邪念的头脑，他只知道服从，任何训练科目他总能鹤立鸡群。他还结识了热衷捕虾的布巴，两个偏执狂之间产生了深厚的友谊 。 而此刻，阿甘一直深深迷恋的珍妮因为《花花公子》 拍摄裸照而被学校开除，在一家夜总会 做起了裸体 歌手。又一次阿甘帮珍妮摆脱了色狼 的纠缠，而珍妮却愠怒的说他不可能永远保护她。她嘱咐即将远赴越南 战场的阿甘遇到危险就赶紧跑。

转眼间，阿甘来到了越南。他的上司是邓•泰勒中尉 ，一个很有责任敢的爱国者 。他告诉阿甘和布巴战场的原则：保护好双脚和不可愚蠢。对捕虾着魔的布巴总在他周围不停的念叨捕虾利润的丰厚，说打算回家后买条捕虾船，让阿甘作他的大副 。 战争 是残酷的，他们遇到唤正了偷袭，阿甘想起了珍妮的话，甩开腿不停的跑，当他跑出很远才发现只有他一人逃脱了敌人的火力范围，他想起了布巴和泰勒中尉，于是又返回丛林一次次背回受伤的战友。最后，他救出了奄奄一息的布巴，布巴只说了一句“我想回家”便死在了阿甘的怀里。

一颗子弹 钻进了阿甘的屁股 ，而泰勒中尉却被截肢。在医院 里养伤的阿甘学会了打乒乓球 ，而且很快成了他的专长，甚至开始表演。暗自苦闷的泰勒不断的埋怨阿甘不该救他，害他成了废人。战争结束后阿甘成了英雄 ，约翰逊 总统亲手授予他国会荣誉勋章。在一次反战集会上，阿甘再次遇见了珍妮。当时她正和一群种族主义者 混在一起，两人匆匆相遇又匆匆分手。 《阿甘正传》剧照作为乒乓外交的使者，阿甘还到中国 参加了乒乓球比赛，为中美建交 立了功。

回国后的阿甘成了明星，在电视台里同约翰•列农 一起接受采访。在电视台 门口，阿甘邂逅了久违的泰勒中尉，伤残退伍后的他身心憔悴，他们在一起过了圣诞节 和新年。不久，阿甘受到了尼克松 总统的接见，而他在无意中迫使潜入水门大厦 的不法分子落入发网，最终导致了尼克松的下台。退役回家的阿甘果真实现了战友布巴的遗愿，买了条捕虾船，并取名珍妮开始出海捕虾，然而满腔热情换回的却是一无所获。来给阿甘作大副的泰勒让他去教堂向上帝祈祷能够有所转机，而一场意外的龙卷风 却让他们因祸得福，只有阿甘的船幸免遇难。随之而来的是挡都挡不住的收获，阿甘发了财，有了12条船，成了百万富翁 。

阿甘的母亲因癌症 去世。阿甘不愿为名利所累，做了义务割草工。珍妮回来了，送给他一双跑鞋 。一天夜晚，珍妮投入了阿甘的怀抱，第二天清晨却悄然离去。 阿甘决定跑步，但他不知道该跑向哪里，3年多跑遍了美国的每个角落。终于一天，他感觉累了，准备回家。阿甘接到了珍妮的信，按照地址找到了珍妮和他们的儿子，值得欣慰的是小阿甘聪明机灵。

结婚之后他们度过了一段幸福时光，但一切阻止不了珍妮病情的恶化。阿甘将珍妮埋在儿时的树下，经常来陪她聊天。 小阿甘也到了上学的年龄，阿甘送儿子上了校车，一根被夹在书里的羽毛 落到地上，被风吹起，又开始飞上天空。
