When I first saw 'The Truman Show' I came out of the theatre amazed. This is your first clue that you are watching something different from your normal Jim Carrey movie. I love the dialogue, camera shot, performances, direction, music, and running time of this movie. There is nothing I would do to change it. I came away from 'The Truman Show' feeling inspired which is the goal of good filmmaking Jim Carrey was outstanding as Truman, underplaying him, not making him too comic or too dramatic, but giving true sincerity when asked. He ends it before you get tired of the concept and helped Carrey and Harris give immaculate performances. Andrew Niccol script is a real star in the movie too because of it's inventiveness and ingenuity. Overall, 'The Truman Show' is what I like to call a true American classic.

I originally thought the premise of the Truman show was that a man simply discovered his life was on reality TV. After seeing it though, I realized how much of an understatement I'd given to a horrifying idea.

Truman (Jim Carrey) seems to live a blessed life. He has a job, a wife, and a good friend. But it is all a deceptive set-up; Truman's entire reality is created by a TV studio who long ago adopted him. Nothing he has is real; great liberties and precautions must be taken to stop him from realizing the truth (he has to schele everything he wants, such as vacations, months in advance). The TV managers decide everything that goes on around him; from who he meets and what they say, to where he goes (never outside his hometown). When he begins to realize what may be going on, the TV show has to stop him; all mayhem breaks loose.

Everything about the Truman Show is wildly inventive; the entire thing is brilliant and original. Smart dialogue and well created sets are essentials; the plot is a refreshing break from today's usual rehash of the same story. With an energetic and powerful music score, it is complete.

A smart choice made by director Peter Wier, in making the film, was the choice to present the film as though watching the fictitious show. Using a wide variety of camera shots that make it seem as though we are watching from the secret cameras placed throughout Truman's town, Wier stages the Truman Show perfectly. His methods are original and creative; the director moves the story along wonderfully.

He gets fine performances from all his actors. Jim Carrey lls down his comedic antics to give the dramatic performance of a man having a paranoid break-down with such fine nuance to suggest he should switch to a career of dramatic performances. Ed Harris plays the TV show's creator; one of the most original and ingenious villains ever created. With conniving ways and a falsely soothing voice, he plays the director with a sinister charm. He is a man trying to trap Truman; he whispers lines to the people in Truman's life as a way to keep the man in.

Little things make the film all the more ingenious and the false setup all the more believable (people promote procts while talking to Truman; Truman experiences a rain that follows him; he notices cars on a continuous run; people seem to talk to no one). But the real winner is the presentation; an original masterwork, fueled by a timeless theme. The human spirit, the will to live, cannot be quashed by anything.

Though adapted from a Stephen King novella, "The Shawshank Redemption" has more to do with a man's internal demons than the kind that routinely rise up from overgrown graveyards. It is hope that allows the self-proclaimed innocent man to survive what may or may not be an unjust imprisonment. And hope is his gift to his friend Red, who no longer even tries to impress the parole board at his hearings. Red's gift to Andy is absolution when he finally confesses his true sins. Whether or not he pulled the trigger, Andy blames himself for causing his wife's death; his redemption comes as he learns to give of himself over the course of this marvelously acted and directed film.

As the story unfolds, however, we're not simply expected to follow it: We're invited to think about the implications. About a world in which modern communications make celebrity possible, and inhuman.

Until fairly recently, the only way you could become really famous was to be royalty, or a writer, actor, preacher or politician--and even then, most people had knowledge of you only through words or printed pictures.

Television, with its insatiable hunger for material, has made celebrities into ``content,'' devouring their lives and secrets. If you think ``The Truman Show'' is an exaggeration, reflect that Princess Diana lived under similar conditions from the day she became engaged to Charles.

Carrey is a surprisingly good choice to play Truman. We catch glimpses of his manic comic persona, just to make us comfortable with his presence in the character, but this is a well-planned performance; Carrey is on the right note as a guy raised to be liked and likable, who decides his life requires more risk and hardship. Like the angels in ``City of Angels,'' he'd like to take his chances.

Ed Harris also finds the right notes as Christof, the TV svengali. He uses the technospeak by which we distance ourselves from the real meanings of our words. (If TV procers ever spoke frankly about what they were really doing, they'd come across like Bulworth.) For Harris, the demands of the show take precedence over any other values, and if you think that's an exaggeration, tell it to the TV news people who broadcast that Los Angeles suicide.

I enjoyed ``The Truman Show'' on its levels of comedy and drama; I liked Truman in the same way I liked Forrest Gump--because he was a good man, honest, and easy to sympathize with.

But the underlying ideas made the movie more than just entertainment. Like ``Gattaca,'' the previous film written by Niccol, it brings into focus the new values that technology is forcing on humanity.

Because we can engineer genetics, because we can telecast real lives--of course we must, right? But are these good things to do? The irony is, the people who will finally answer that question will be the very ones proced by the process.

It is the trigger that sets him questioning everything around him. What is behind the facades of the buildings he has never entered? Why do people seem to be travelling around him in a perfectly synchronized loop? What is going on outside his home-town? Truman is, it turns out, the unwitting star of a top-rated 24-hour-a-day TV docu-soap. Under the careful critical scrutiny to which it has been subjected, the plot turns out not to be watertight. This is to miss the point of what is a hilarious and breathtakingly conceived satire which also allows Carrey to edge away from broad comedy. The Truman Show is also oddly moving and has, as you would expect from a Weir film, a pronounced metaphysical slant with Ed Harris playing the show's archly named procer/creator Christof.
