《吻别》是我1988年作的曲子，是因为一部叫做《末代皇帝》的电影给我的影响。1988年这部由意大利导演拍摄的作品，获得六十届奥斯卡最佳影片、最佳导演、最佳原始音乐九项大奖，而获得最佳音乐殊荣的是为此片配乐的日本音乐大师坂本龙一。坂本龙一是我非常敬仰的音乐大师，他的作品也是我非常喜欢的。在电影中故事情节穿插着配乐可以在影片起到点睛的作用，这也是音乐的另一种体现形式。身为音乐人的我觉得这种音乐表现形式很不错，就想用自己的方式作有中国特色的电影配乐，然后按自己的音乐理念融入了大量中国传统器乐作了一首分为四个章节的曲子，也就是《吻别》曲子的前身。当时我正在宝丽金任职，为学友担任制作，一直想作一首很适合学友的音乐，在学友要发行专辑的时，我就把这个当初为电影而作的配乐重新编写成为《吻别》的曲子给学友，我个人觉得这首曲子是非常适合学友本人的。说真话在当时这首曲子并不是很符合那个年代的流行趋势，自己也没期望会成为大红的歌曲。这首歌推出后，意外地受到很多人的喜欢，并且流行起来，取得了不错的成绩。
