韩愈,字退之,唐朝邓州南阳人,是当时的大文豪,主张文以载道之说,以复古为革命,用散文代替骈文,影响当时及后代非常大,所以有文起八代之衰之功劳,他很反对佛教,唐宪宗派使者要去迎接佛骨入朝,他上表谏阻,得罪了皇帝。
被贬到潮州去当刺史的官,他在潮州结识了一个老和尚,这位和尚聪明达理,和韩愈很谈得来,而韩愈在潮州又很少有朋友,所以和这位和尚往来比较密切,因而外间的人都传说韩愈也相信佛教了。
他的朋友孟简(几道),当时做着尚书,是最信奉佛教的,也因为得罪宪宗皇帝被贬谪到吉州去。到了吉州后,他也听到人们的传说,说韩愈已经信起佛来,他有点疑惑,因为他知道韩愈是反对信仰最力的人,为此,他特地写了一封信去问韩愈。
韩愈接到孟几道的信后,知道他与和尚往来,才引起别人发生了误会,马上回信向孟几道加以解释。而且,韩愈对当时在朝的一班大臣们,信奉佛教,不守儒道,一味拿迷信来蛊惑皇帝,大大加以抨击。他对皇帝疏远贤人,使儒道坠落,颇为愤慨。信中有这样的话:“百孔千疮,随乱随失,共危如一发引千钧…”
