Julia Roberts: Since her screen debut in the late 1980s, Julia Roberts, this winsome beauty with a large, incandescent smile, has been among Hollywood’s top draws and one of the few bankable female stars of the early 1990s. Her onscreen charisma and atypical beauty has guaranteed her an enviable choice of roles, be they in comedy or drama.
What makes Roberts become a household name is her greatest success in 1990 to star opposite Richard Gere in the romantic comedy Pretty Woman, a runaway international hit. After her marriage in 1993 (divorced two years later), Roberts made a successful comeback in The Pelican Brief, but the following year’s I Love Trouble and Pret-a-Porter proved to be disappointments. In 1996, her career graally picked up with Mary Reilley, Michael Collins and Conspiracy Theory. In 1997, Roberts made a triumphant return to romantic comedy in the darkly funny My Best Friends Wedding and continued her romantic comedy upswing in 1999 with Notting Hill and Runaway Bride, which helped to further restore Roberts to her status as the most bankable woman in Hollywood. Hugh Grant (born in London, 1960): A graate of Oxford, Hugh Grant was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history (No.43, 1995). Although his classic good looks make him a shoo-in for romantic leads, Grant’s comic capabilities―marked by a nervous stutter, desperately fluttering eyelids, and an ability to capture a brand of distinctly English embarrassment―have marked him as more of a comic performer than a serious leading man.
What gave Hugh Grant almost overnight transatlantic stardom is his starring roles in two 1994 films, Sirens and Four Weddings and a Funeral (earning him a Golden Globe for Best Actor). In 1995, Grant gained fame of an entirely different sort when he was arrested for soliciting the services of an L.A. prostitute. The box-office take of Nine Months, released on the heels of his arrest, was buoyed by his notoriety. The actor managed to recoup some of his professional dignity with the acclaimed Ann Lee’s Sense and Sensibility (1995), and then he reappeared in 1999’s commercially successful Notting Hill. Back together with his former girlfriend, model/actress Elizabeth Hurley (September 2000) Grant was voted fourth in the Orange 2001 Film Survey of Greatest British film actors. And Jay Leno (Comedian, TV/radio host, Hosting NBC’s The Tonight Show) told the London Independent that there are only 18 celebrities worth having on a chat show, one of them being Hugh Grant.

Notting Hill is a diversion with awesome diversionary power. I didn't realize until it was well over that it could also be titled, Fifth Wedding, But No Funeral.
It was written by Richard Curtis, the writer of Four Weddings and a Funeral. It's a vehicle for Hugh Grant, who is as good here as he was in Four Weddings. Maybe better. It's an extraordinarily effective romantic comedy told in the idiom of Four Weddings' very-British humor.

But the odds of moving their relationship to that final stage are still stacked against them as they live in two different worlds, Anna's under constant public scrutiny of the gossip hungry press, who, along with the public at large, know that Anna is already in a personal relationship with equally famous movie actor, Jeff King.

Not usually impressed with Romantic Comedies, i found this one strangely compelling. It really was a nice movie, littered with great characters, especially Spike played by Rhys Ifans (Hilarious).
The story demonstrates to the extreme that love can occur between the most unlikely of people, and the humorous portrayal of this, is both touching and realistic. And i mean realistically created, not necessarily true realism.
Worthy of your attention, this well written romantic comedy is a must for fans of the genre and is a good gamble if your not.

Notting Hill proves one thing -- jokes lie in the oddest places. This film is an excellent vehicle for Julia Roberts to put her own life as an actress under the microscope. While Roberts' "Anna Scott" character isn't an autobiographical figure, the Scott character allows for some biting satire at the life of Roberts herself. Need I mention some excellent one liners in the film like the sister of Hugh Grant... "I feel like we are sisters", an excellent throw-back to "My Best Friend's Wedding"... or my favourite, a discussion about nude body doubles just before a nude Julia Roberts (or a Julia Roberts body double) crosses the screen.
Apart from the small bit of satire, Grant's character plays on the emotions of every guy who has ever unexplainably fell in to, threw orange juice-on, lost out on, and fell back in to love. Roberts character can only help us understand how such a relationship as the one her and Grant share in the movie, could be "Surreal, but nice."
