好莱坞八大电影公司
好莱坞最早的八大影业是指米高梅（MGM）、派拉蒙（Paramount）、福克斯（20th Century Fox）、华纳（Warner Bros.）、联美（United Artists）、环球（Universal）、哥伦比亚（Columbia）和雷电华（RKO）八家。
这八家电影公司创立组成的美国电影协会（MPAA）为所有在美国上映的影片分级，并为美国电影的利益进行游说。当时的八大影业全是垄断企业，特别是前5家公司，不但垄断了电影制作、发行各个环节还拥有自己的院线，直到20世纪50年代才迫于美国反垄断法而出售了自己的院线（但目前大电影公司又开始介入影院经营，如索尼已拥有美国最大院线20%的股份）。由于失去院线加上电视普及的冲击，八大公司陷入了前所未有的困境并导致雷电华在50年代破产，但因为迪斯尼（Walt Disney）的崛起，填补了雷电华留下的空位。
之后好莱坞开始进入萧条期，20世纪70年代，原来的第一大公司米高梅逐渐衰落，而被联美收购，但联美的好日子尚未开始，就因为投资了影史上最最亏本的“巨片”《天堂之门》而破产，反而要米高梅来收拾残局，组成了米高梅/联美（MGM/UA），八大影业变为七大。与此同时，一些小公司在20世纪六、七十年代建立并崭露头角，象三星（TriStar）、新线（New Line)、卡洛可（Carolco）、奥利安（Orion）等，但它们始终没有达到七大的规模，三星和新线直到被大公司收购才有了进一步的发展。
20世纪80年代初，好莱坞开始复苏——大购并开始了。先是依旧衰弱的米高梅被CNN的母公司特纳广播收购，特纳已经有了新线和城堡岩（Castle Rock——《肖申克的救赎》、《绿里奇迹》等名片的制作公司）两家电影厂，并很快发现米高梅的烂摊子很难消化，于是特纳在留下米高梅唯一值钱的东西——世上最大的影片库来充实自己的电视节目后（这就是为什么许多米高梅/联美的老片的DVD是由华纳发行的原因），就把米高梅转手给了一家意大利金融财团，唯一让米高梅感到一丝希望的是特纳没有夺走007的嫒ā?br />
1985年，即使《星球大战》三部曲的发行也未能使福克斯摆脱破产的阴影，澳洲人默多克的新闻集团及时出现并收购了它，媒体大亨默多克确实有起死回生的绝招，在新闻集团的运作下，福克斯不但恢复了昔日的辉煌，还在此基础上建立了美国第四大电视网FOX。日本的索尼收购了CBS唱片后也在1989年从可口可乐手里收购了哥伦比亚和三星，组成了索尼影业（Sony Pictures/Columbia-TriStar），尽管新公司一开始连续多年的亏损让索尼不堪重负，但索尼并不愿放弃。而索尼的同乡松下在收购环球及其母公司MCA后，发现盈利遥遥无期，也未能给其影音硬件的销售带来多大好处，便将MCA售与了加拿大酒业巨头西格玛。迪斯尼通过《小美人鱼》也重展雄风，并且为了区别其儿童片的发行，迪斯尼成立了专门发行“大人片”的试金石（Touchstone）和好莱坞影业（Hoolywood Pictures），并将三个发行品牌集合为博伟发行公司（Buena Vista——BV）。
但进入90年代后，凭借《本能》、《终结者》系列等成功巨片春风得意的卡洛可却开始遇到了大麻烦，它的规模无法承受连续进行的大投资，《割吼岛》的失败让它血本无归、掏空家底，《星门》的上映让卡洛可彻底破了产，它的影片库出售给了米高梅。时代华纳在90年代收购了特纳广播，新线和城堡岩也就加入了时代华纳。
从20世纪90年代中后期至新世纪，七大公司全部都成为了跨国传媒集团的一部分：迪斯尼收购了美国最大的独立片商Miramax和ABC电视网；派拉蒙被拥有MTV的维亚康姆（Viacom）收购，并建立了UPN电视网；福克斯重组为福克斯娱乐集团并建立了美国第三大独立片商福克斯探射灯（Fox Searchlight）；时代华纳与美国在线（AOL）合并；西格玛收购了宝丽金后，由于发生巨额亏损，又被法国媒体巨头维旺迪购并，重组为一家新公司维旺迪-环球（Vividen-Universal）；米高梅尽管仍未恢复元气（其市场份额甚至不及Miramax等独立片商，海外发行权也委托给了福克斯），但也建立了自己的有线电视网，并且既收购了卡洛可影片库后，又收购了奥利安、宝丽金影业等破产公司的影片库，重新拥有了世上最大的电影库。当然，新成立不久的梦工厂（DreamWorks）也开始显露实力，但无论从其市场份额还是涉及业务的深度广度来说要成为新的第八大还有距离。
2004年，长久的谈判之后，其间经历索尼的犹豫和华纳的放弃，索尼影业终于倾30亿美元巨资，并负担了米高梅的20亿高额债务，确定了对米高梅集团的收购，而最终的收购工作也将在2005年年中完成。通过这次收购，索尼取得了米高梅丰厚的影片库，也为进一步占领电影之场做好了准备。这次收购也就意味着，曾经的八大又少了一家。
因此，现在八大影业已成一种俗语，指的是好莱坞的主流片商，真正称的上“大”的目前只有6家，也就是美国电影协会（MPAA）目前的6个成员：索尼影业（Sony/Columbia）(包括米高梅（MGM/UA）)，福克斯（20th Century Fox）、迪斯尼（Disney/Buena Vista）、华纳（Warner Bros.）、派拉蒙（Paramount）、环球（Universal）。
