Million Dollar Baby review by Brian McKay
After all the Oscar hype and hundreds of glowing reviews, and more than a few personal recommendations, I finally got around to seeing the "Year's Best Film". But it's only past the halfway point that MILLION DOLLAR BABY truly becomes a great film, rather than a collection of sports movie cliches (albeit well-written and well-acted sports movie cliches).
Although I enjoyed the film's first half, I couldn't help but think "It's Rocky . . . with a chick." (Insert mb "Rockette" joke here . . . or better yet, don't). Hillary Swank is Maggie Fitzgerald, a dirt-poor white-trash waitress whose only love, and only shot at a better life, is boxing. Clint Eastwood is Frank Dunn, the gruff old trainer who doesn't work with "girlies", and yet begrudgingly takes on Maggie as his latest protege after more than a little nudging from Eddie Dupris (Morgan Freeman), a broken-down old boxer who runs Frank's gym for him and serves as best (perhaps only) friend and confidante. We see Maggie getting better under Frank's tutelage, via the obligatory montages (and I had to push that damn "Montage" song from TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE to the back of my mind at one point), and we see the relationship between them growing. Maggie finds a surrogate for her dead father in Frank, and he finds the same in her, as she takes the place of the daughter who no longer speaks to him for reasons unknown. Soon enough, Maggie becomes a really good boxer - like "knock everyone out in the first round" good, and she and Frank hit the women's boxing circuit with a vengeance. It all comes down to a really big match against a tough and feared opponent.
And then the movie stops being about boxing, and becomes entirely something else. And what makes that transition so powerful is the fact that we've really come to care about Maggie and Frank, and have seen them become much more than reincarnations of Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) and Mickey (Burgess Meredith). No, MILLION DOLLAR BABY takes us in a gut- wrenching new direction that completely redeems it from being just another well-intentioned sports flick. And it's also at this point that you realize that MILLION DOLLAR BABY isn't really about Boxing at all. Maggie could have been a championship jockey or gymnast or pianist virtuoso, and the story could have still gone in the exact same direction (only without all the cool scenes of her beating people down to the mat).
More than anything, it is a heartfelt examination of what makes somebody "family", as well as catalyst for looking back at one's life and facing the question "Did I give it my best shot?" The beauty of Frank and Maggie's relationship is how deep it runs without ever being overstated. The words "I love you" are never exchanged, but they never need to be. They are ultimately two people who are just content to be in each other's lives. Meanwhile, Eddie's intervention that brings them together, and his occasional voice-over narratives, serve as the glue that binds the whole thing together.
My only complaints are that it relies so heavily on tried-but-true sport movie adages in the first half, and although Swank is definitely in shape for this film (her muscle tone ring the jumprope scene is amazing), she still looks just a tad too frail to be knocking out women twice her size with a simple one-two combo (although the fight scenes are rather exciting). But the film's biggest contrivance is the broad depiction of Maggie's family as a bunch of heartless and money-grubbing white trash. Although I did end up hating every one of them and wanting to burn down their trailer park, the characters felt like little more than set pieces used to push emotional buttons. Perhaps a little more backstory to explain why her family is so disdainful of her would have provided enough context for more credibility - although I have to admit, I did enjoy the final scene between Maggie and her family, in that most basic "Hell yeah!" kind of way.
These quibbles aside, MILLION DOLLAR BABY is a strong film. Best movie of the year? I don't know, but I will give Swank the nod for that gold statuette, and Clint continues his long streak of never letting me down . . . well, okay, except for PINK CADILLAC. Damn, that movie was bad.

Take a piano. The keys begin, the keys end. You know there are eightyeight of them, nobody can tell you any different. They are not infinite. You are infinite. And on these keys the music that you can make is infinite. I like that. That I can live by.
What I didn't see. In all that sprawling city there was everything except an end. There was no end. What I did not see was where the whole thing came to an end. The end of the world...
You get me up on that gangway and you're rolling out in front of me a keyboard of millions of keys, millions and billions of keys that never end. That they never end. That keyboard is infinite. And if that keyboard is infinite, then on that keyboard there is no music you can play. You're sitting on the wrong bench. That's God's piano.
How do you choose just one? One woman, one house, one piece of land to call your own, one landscape to look at, one way to die...
I was born on this ship, and the world passed me by, but two thousand people at a time. And there were wishes here, but never more than fit between prow and stern. You played out your happiness, but on a piano that was not infinite. I learned to live that way.

看了《虎门销烟》后,学生认为无法联系实际,我就这样启发学生:你看后印象最深的是哪个镜头?有的说林则徐带领官兵虎门销烟的镜头,大展中国人的志气;有的说,当时的清朝政府的腐败无能给我教育最深;
什么东西给现今人们带来精神和身体摧残?我们应该如何对待?这样,学生马上想到了电视上披露有的海关把关不严,让一些走私物品进入中国,有的想到了社会上的吸毒现象和不健康的游乐场所,同学们畅所欲语,仿佛一下子有话可写了;

Impressions Of The Film "DEAD POETS SOCIETY"
"Oh, captain, my captain!" A new English teacher of a traditional school would like his students to call him like that. He was Mr. Keating, and he was an unusual teacher.
Mr. Keating let his students tear their books in his class, for he thought that this part of the book was rubbish. He even let the students stand on their desk, for he thought that the students will change the angle of facing things. He used "Uncle Whitman" 's verse "I sound my barbaric YAWP over the roofs of the world" to let his student proce his own poem. He told some of his students about the "Dead Poets Society", and these boys rebuilt it. Mr. Keating was so great in boys' hearts. They loved him, and they thought that he changed their lives. But the school master was not very happy because he broke the rules. He was good, or bad?
One of his students, Neil, wanted to get a character—a fairy. But his father wanted to stop him. By Mr. Keating's help he played it, and he did it very well. On that night, his father was very very angry, because he would like his son to be a doctor, not an actor. Neil was so sad, and he took his own life. His father believed that Mr. Keating cause it. The school let Keating resign the job. But all of his students, Todd, Knox, Charlie... stood on the desk to tell the headmaster that Mr. Keating was clean.
The film is over. We don't know the ending. But we know that the teacher loves his students and they love their teacher, too. This is a very touching story. When so many birds are flying the sky, it amazes me with the majesty. When Neil is dead and the boys run into the snowfield, lots of us cry. When the students stand on the desk to show that their teacher is clean, we even want to clap for them! This teacher doesn't only teach the students knowledge; he also tells his students something about life. He is a good teacher. But he is too unusual to let others understand him. seeing
While I don't like Neil's death. It's a sad event. But it's a good film, I think. The frames on the screen are bright and charming. It attracts me. And I was moved by this film.

Hello, everyone, my topic today is “The ShawShank Redemption”. Prison as a special place for prisoners is part of the society. It’s special because of its depriving the freedom of the prisoners. The prisoners in that situation are more sensitive to freedom than people in other situations. When they lost it, they found that it was so necessary to them that they looked forward to regaining it. By contrast, the people lived in the political society were interested in courting the fame and gain. They lost most of their inherent character. They put their soul into the fence of their own. They gave up the freedom of thinking. They forgot their original dream. The demands of the spirit were materialized to a position or some numbers.
A prisoner spent almost all the life in the prison. When he got the parole, which was applied for many years but without reply, he didn’t feel happy, but sad. He wanted to go to the prison again. He wanted to live in the place he knew. In the prison, he was a key who had knowledge and position. But when he went out of the prison, he found he was only an old man without anything. He couldn’t finish his work quickly because his hands had suffered the arthritis. Unfortunately, he even had no power to struggle. As a result, He chose to suicide because it was the only thing he could do by himself.
Red was a superman in the prison. He could find things that weren’t in the prison at all. But when he went out of the prison, he could do nothing. He lived in the fear and felt so lonely. He loved freedom but he couldn’t realize his value. In this film, Red said, “Hope is a dangerous thing. Drive a man insane. Nothing will take place here. You’d better get used to the idea. These walls here are kinds of funny. At the beginning, you hate them, then you will get used to them. As time passes, you will depend on them. That's institutionalizing.”
In this film, Andy as the symbol of the hope lived in the prison for 20 years. He remained his dream all the time. On one hand, he looked forward to getting freedom. On the other hand, he believed that he was innocent of the murder. The real reason was his profound thought about hope. In his opinion, hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing, and no good things ever die. It makes a strong man save himself, and a great man save another one. According to this idea, the life in prison for 20 years did not made Andy give up the hope, but made him comprehend the meaning of the life. In fact, hope is a mood without ambition but it really exists.
The sky, the sea and the beach compose a romantic picture. When Andy and Red, two weather-beaten friends, saw each other again in the island, all hardship of 20 years made Andy tougher and their friendship get harder as the same.

Somewhere, under the sea, weak-finned clown fish Nemo (Alexander Gould) lives with his fretful father, Marlin (Albert Brooks). Smothered by pop\'s paranoia, he ventures away from the reef, but his dad\'s dread is justified when a passing diver whisks him away. Taken to a tank in a Sydney dentists, Nemo meets Gill (Willem Dafoe) and co - friendly fish who dream of escaping to the ocean. Meanwhile, Marlin bumps into a blue tang named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), and sets out to save his son... The splendour of natural history hit The Blue Planet is matched by the wit of the script and stars. Barry Humphries has a terrific cameo as a great white shark who\'s sworn off killing (Remember, fish are friends, not food!), while DeGeneres provides perfect timing and tone as Dory, whose short-term memory loss is a gag that never stops running After the appreciation of the film Titanic, I have noticed some meaningful details behind the peoples’ general impression of simply an affectional film. The wreck of the Titanic occurred in 1912, in which the great recession started from the end of the 19th Century still hasn’t ended. Most critics pointed out that the sinking of the Titanic represents the collapse of the Capitalism in the end of the 19th Century. However, I would like to say that, in this movie, the director had not only foreran the crisis of the Capitalism, but also showed some of the human nature, from both gloomy and brilliant aspects, like selfish, mammonish, vainglorious, and love, hope, bravery, faith, and so on. In this essay, I will first reveal this film’s indication of the social context of that age, then I will analyse the two contrary aspects of human nature indicated in this film through some impressive shots. Under the development of instrial technology, the economy in the Capitalism countries took off. People lived a rich, luxury and expensive life, and this rapid economic development lasted for almost 20 years. People had got used to this kind of life. The huge development in machinery changed people’s life greatly. Innovations of transportation, such as vehicles and tankers, allowed people to travel around. The appearance of these modern transportations was an important milestone of the instrialization. People thus became very confident on human intellectual capabilities. They believed their power of conquering the nature is inapproachable. While the Titanic is also called The Ship of Dreamers, in this film, when it bearing in with the ocean in the darkness, the mysterious ocean represents the unknown nature and the ship itself represents the advanced material capabilities people owned. In a shot that Mr Bruce explains his design of the Titanic, he said the ship possesses huge size, stability, luxury, and strength, and that the supremacy will never be challenged. In fact, all these words can be thought of the symbols of the Capitalism of that time in many people’s eyes. They thought the Capitalism is just like the Titanic, which should be unsinkable. The wonderful way of developing economy would stay in good condition eternally. However, things do not always follow the way people wish to be. The economic recession suddenly attacked the Capitalism countries at the end of the 19th Century. It was not until then that people did not realize the impracticality of their idealized unsinkable Capitalism. Capitalism will sink. And unfortunately it did sink. Just like the movie shows, when the ship broke into two parts and began to sink quicker and quicker, everybody knows the ship is going to sink, the priest kept reiterating to the disciples, the former would has passed away. As to the human nature uncovered in this film, can be thought of from both negative and positive aspects. I will first elucidate some gloomy characteristics revealed by the film. The first impressive characteristic may be that the fiancé of Rose, Karl would gain his ends by fair means or foul. When he noticed that Rose has obliquity with Jack, he took out the necklace with a diamond of 56 carats named the heart of the ocean, to request Rose not to leave him. He knows that Rose doesn’t love him, but he chose to use money to keep Rose with him. When Titanic was sinking, both Jack and Karl were trying to trick Rose into getting on the accident boat. Since Karl had already bribed a sailor, he lied to Rose that he would ensure that Jack will also get on the boat. Nevertheless, when Karl himself was rejected to get on the accident boat, he again used an intrigue that he picked up an outcast child and pretended to be the father of the child, and managed to get on the accident boat. Another negative social mood of that time exposed by the film is vanity. Rose’s mother wanted to marry her daughter to Karl just because Karl is extremely rich, while she doesn’t care whether Rose loves him or not. When Jack wearing a suit borrowed from a woman to attend the dinner invited by Karl, he was respected by other guests. However, when he wore his own clothes maybe a little bit shabby, and tried to enter the ballroom to look for Rose, he was driven out by the two guards outside the ballroom. The two respondences depending on Jack’s appearance contrasted sharply, and really very shocking for us to imagine a society like that. Anyway, there are some brilliant aspects of human nature showed in this film. There is love, bravery, faith, and beliefs existing at the scene. The presence of love was impenetrated through the whole film. The love is not only expressed between Jack and Rose, but also exists among the families. When the water was poured into the ship, when men are forced to be obstructed from their wives and children, an old couple held each other tightly in the bed; a father comforted his daughter he will just leave her for a while, just a little while… When Titanic was sinking, some musicians were performing pieces of music, some disciples were praying to Virgin Mary around the priest on their knees… In conclusion, the film of Titanic is not simply an affectional story between Jack and Rose. It shows more than love. The wreck of Titanic represents the collapse of the Capitalism, which is considered unsinkable by most people. The film also shows different aspects of human nature. Some people own strong vainglory, while some other possess much of love; still others are rich in firm faith and beliefs. We should always keep in mind that, no matter how enormous the calamity is, no matter how defective the people are, we should believe there are always more virtue than vice in the world… Or the dream factory has always been the high standard, the screen exquisite detail, vivid characters vivid, touching story twists and turns, the most important thing is it in the most simple and easy to understand that the way of a token, that is - there is no shortcut to the world and Cheats, the only winning Famen is believe in themselves.More do not want to repeat the story, because it really well. Look at the process, appeared frequently Huiyi people laugh, the whole atmosphere is relaxed and go. This film has done very authentic, a little bit by the Westerners did not interpret the feeling, no matter which story or convey the moods, whether the screen or the details are all the way east; only special is probably the Speaking of modern, such as, for example ok Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by British author J. I have spent hours re-watching various scenes and noticing all the perfection with which they are acted and directed. It\'s not the violence or action sequences that make this movie so great (although they are well done...), but rather moments like where Mathilda knocks on Leon\'s door. It would be so easy to just film the door opening, but instead we see light illuminating Natalie Portman\'s face, symbolizing something angelic. And the moment has so much more meaning.I know a lot of people who have seen this film because they are action fans. I\'m not. But I\'m glad I finally found it, because it\'s a wonderful film in so many other ways.
