摩根弗里曼出身于美国田纳西州的曼菲斯，在修习戏剧前就读于洛杉矶社区大学，1945年至1959年间在美国空军服役。弗里曼是从纽约外百老汇开始发展，1968年才进军百老汇，参与一部全由黑人演员演出的舞台剧【Hello, Dolly!】，之后便游走于百老汇以及外百老汇的舞台上，从音乐剧、现代剧场再到古典的莎翁名剧，演出类型之多充分展现他的表演才能。

在百老汇闯出一番名号后，弗里曼转投入电视圈，1971至1976年，在美国公共电视的一个儿童英语教学节目中扮演「好好读」先生，期间并演出他的首部电影【Who Says I Can't Ride a Rainbow】－一部温馨小品的儿童片。
七○年代期间，弗里曼的作品零星散见于大小影幕，不过，并没有太突出的成绩，一直到1980年在劳勃瑞福主演的【黑狱风云】中精湛出色的表现才获得影评一致的赞赏。1982至1984年间在一部电视连续剧中固定的演出则为他开展了更广的知名度。
【黑狱风云】之后，弗里曼接演的几部片都没有造成太大的回响，直到1987年在【黑狱风云】中，以情绪化的皮条客一角获得奥斯卡最佳男配角提名后，摩根弗里曼的演艺事业至此起飞，片约不断。
1989年的【温馨接送情】(又名<为戴茜小姐开车>此片也获得当年奥斯卡最佳影片)是摩根弗里曼最为人熟悉的演出之一，片中弗里曼饰演一个正直而细心的美国南方私家司机，不愠不火的演出为他赢得美国外百老汇的最高荣誉－奥比奖，以及奥斯卡最佳男主角的提名。
1989年弗里曼的另一部作品，则是在马修柏得利克主演的【光荣战役】中饰演一个专为人挖墓穴的工人，坚毅而对世俗歧视极度不满的他，毅然决定加入由马修柏得利克领导、全由黑人组成部队，为自己的自由而战。而也由于在【光荣战役】中正直的形象，为弗里曼争取到在【铁腕校长】中的校长一角。
