76年的中国，还是计划经济阶段，生活的形式是简单的，感觉却是幸福的，电影里小两口已经有了一对龙凤胎作为母亲的却还想要生孩子，在说着计划要孩子的时候母亲（徐帆饰演）表现出来的热情与对孩子的热爱是那么的的纯粹与无私完全没有考虑到自己生活质量的问题。
一家四口的日子没有任何的问题，父母健健康康的，孩子活泼可爱。虽然爱孩子的心是无私的，可是在对待男女平等的问题上，几千年来男尊女卑的中国式思维方式依然在无形中主导着大多数人去思考问题。当只剩下最后一个西红柿的时候，双胞胎的姐妹两，女孩子就得做出牺牲让着男孩，这不是偏爱，这是一种习惯，一种重男轻女思想的延续。
地震突然来袭的时候，所有的幸福与小市民简单的生存方式被摇得碎如粉，无能为力的无可奈何。几分钟前还在灰扑扑的车里与丈夫玩车震，那简单的风情与浪漫表现出了他们对生活的热爱与满足这着实难得，一句台词：“这么热的天，全唐山就我们俩做这事。”简单而生动的描述出了他们对现状的满足；几分钟后却阴阳两隔，生死殊途，没有半点的提示，没有一点点的预兆，在瓦砾倒下的那一刻，丈夫推了妻子最后一把，妻子得以死里逃生，这爱用生命划上了一个凄美的句号。
