中文劇情：
影片從1946年講起，緬因州一位銀行家安迪喝得醉醺醺地上了自己的車，還把手槍里裝了子彈，接著有他妻子與人私通的畫面，再下來他就被判刑入獄，成了肖申克監獄的重罪犯。
在獄中，他與黑人囚犯雷德互相幫助，成為好朋友；而以博格斯為首的一群囚犯卻經常襲擊安迪。後來，獄警們發現了安迪的理財能力，都來找他做投資咨詢，甚至孩子升學問題也來找他請教。監獄長讓他做假帳，從中漁利。
多年過去，有一天，安迪鄭重地對雷德說：如果你出獄，一定到某地一棵樹下把一個盒子挖出來。當天夜晚，安迪越獄。雷德獲釋後照安迪的話做，兩個朋友在墨西哥海濱重逢了。
