Alex與Aaron都是在San Fernando Valley當地與附近長大的。這對搭檔會相遇，是因為幾年前年紀稍長的Aaron開始和Alex的姐姐約會。有次Aaron撇見了Alex擺在家裡的吉他，便忍不住好奇了起來。「我問他姊他彈得好不好，她說很好。她告訴我的時候Alex才十五歲，我說，『喔！別扯了！』可是一旦我聽到他唱歌，我明白他的歌聲確實是獨一無二的。Alex回憶說：「我姐姐最後跟Aaron說，『你到底是要和我弟玩音樂還是要和我約會？』好吧，我們現在還是在一起玩音樂。」青春期的活力與堅持終於有了代價。一個RCA唱片的A＆R發掘了他們倆，一開始只是鼓勵而已，但後來則是發展成一紙真正的合同。之後的幾年給了兩人充裕的時間去組織一個完整的樂隊，而他們也開始在南加州的音樂圈裡四處表演。「我們的第一個樂隊叫做Generation Gap，」Alex回憶道。「我們是從分類廣告"Recycler"上查找團員的。我們的第一個鼓手有五十八歲，貝斯手也有四十歲，我們覺得這樣很酷。」
