1919年，哈里·考恩、傑克·考恩兩兄弟與喬·布蘭迪共同創建了考恩-布蘭迪-考恩電影公司，也就是哥倫比亞影業公司的前身。「考恩-布蘭迪-考恩」的很多早期作品都是低成本影片，被人形象地稱之為「咸牛肉加捲心菜」。1924年，考恩兄弟買下了布蘭迪的全部股份，將公司更名為哥倫比亞影業公司，用以提高自身形象。

「手持火炬的女人」這個標識是1924年設計的，但這位女模特的真實身份從沒有得到證實，雖然有10多名女性聲稱就是標識中的「火炬女郎」。在1962年的自傳中，貝蒂·戴維斯稱克勞迪婭·戴爾就是這位女模特；1987年，《人物》雜志又將哥倫比亞女演員阿米莉婭·巴切勒推向前台；2001年，《芝加哥太陽時報》則認為在哥倫比亞做群眾演員的簡·巴塞洛繆才是真正的「火炬女郎」。由於哥倫比亞的標識多年來一直處在變化之中，所有3種說法都有可能是正確的。

當前使用的「火炬女郎」標識是1993年由邁克爾·迪斯設計的，他受索尼影視娛樂有限公司的委託，讓「火炬女郎」的形象回歸經典。雖然有人指出女星安妮特·貝南就是當時的模特，但女模的真正身份卻是路易斯安那州的一名家庭主婦和壁畫家詹妮·約瑟夫。迪斯並沒有直接採用詹妮的面部，而是利用電腦生成的特徵創造了一張「合成臉」。
