回顧電腦特效的歷史，早在1963年，就有了第一部電腦影片，1969年出現世界第一部用電腦影像完成的廣告片，1973年第一部電腦2D動畫《West World》面市，電影界也逐步把各種電腦效果，少量地應用在電影當中，例如電影《星球大戰》即是例子之一。

1977年，奧斯卡電影頒獎禮主辦單位意識到電腦效果對電影的重要，增設最佳視覺效果一獎，而《星球大戰》和另一部電影《第三類接觸》一起入圍，由前者拿下這個獎項。
