因為一石二鳥是17世紀從英語的「kill two birds with one stone」翻譯過來的詞彙，而非漢語來源的詞彙。至於「一石三鳥」之類的說法則反而是「一石二鳥」派生而來。與之相對，漢語中意思相近的說法是「一舉兩得」「一箭雙雕」。
