Dead Poets Society was a movie that took some in depth realization. Robin Williams did a fantastic job depicting indivialism and how to walk on your own. He realized that these young men were going to be shaped in either a bad way or could shape themselves into the type of men they wanted to become.Sure, everyone around them were jerks and stiffs but that is the environment of the school. People just didn't go up against all odds, and everything was OK. That is exactly what Dead Poets Society was showing. Even though there were consequences to the boys being inspired and re-forming "Dead Poets Society" they still learned to march to their own drummer. They could be boys and go for their own dreams and ambitions. This movie showed Williams in a different light and i have so much respect for his character. He believed enough in these boys to loose his job. Standing on desks may not make everything better, but it shows the real meaning of the movie. These boys had been taught to conform and put their beliefs aside, but Williams opened up their hearts and made a lot of people, whether they liked it or not, realize that tradition is not always the way to push your children. If all you can look at is the expression on Neil Perrys fathers face, when he realized what his son had done, then you really didn't get the point. This was not Mr. Perrys life, and Williams knew that and was not about to cover up Neils dreams and tell him exactly the opposite of what he had been teaching him all along. Dead Poets Society was an unbelievable movie that showed how this teacher believed so much in his students, that it changed their lives.

It's a story of the generation gap that inevitably occurs between immigrant mother's and their daughters who were brought up surrounded by different values. Each mother strives to raise her children in a way that will bring them success and joy in life. Each hopes to free their offspring from the pains they themselves had to enre.
It is also about the Chinese way of pushing a child to be the best, and gives insight into a mother's need to see her own struggles amount to something great in her daughter. However, this is not just about Asians. It is about all parents hopes and all children's frustrations with fulfilling those dreams.
In America the story of the first generational gap is a very real and painful one. It happens for boys as much as girls, and I know a lot of men who relate to this film despite it's inherent chick flick nature. It celebrates the need to keep your roots and history alive, even if you let go of certain traditions that you were not born into.
The women in the film often make hard choices. Many of them folly and sin, but it is not a film about forgiving them so much as it is about the lasting effect of the choices we make.
Everyone should see this film. It's one of the most honest human dramas out there.

I had been told that Merryl Streep is great in this movie but the movie isn't really very good, so I went in with very low expectations. Maybe that was good: I really liked "The Devil Wears Prada" a lot.
Maybe I liked it because of two things I had in common with Andy: first, I have had the experience of starting a new job with only the vaguest idea of what I was supposed to do (and how to do it) and finding that everyone expected me to perform competently, without any training or help, right away. Second, I have had a boss (female) who was so difficult to please and so willing to tell her underlings how stupid they were that several quit without even waiting until they could find other jobs. In other words, I could really relate to Andy's situation. Stuff like that actually does happen in the real world. Perhaps, that is the reason that I was possibly the only person in the theater who was hoping Andy would not make the choice she made.
One thing that Miranda Priestley (Merryl Streep) had going that my Boss From Hell did not was class. It would have been very easy to create Miranda as a monster, but, wisely and skillfully, Merryl Streep allowed her to have a dignity and intelligence that made her seem to be demanding but not sadistic.
Stanley Tucci is superb as Nigel, the ambitious, hard working man who dreams of having a position of power like Miranda's some day.
"The Devil Wears Prada" is a very funny movie that is not as far divorced from the real world as, I believe, the procers of this movie may have thought.

In 1993, not many films major films with top stars had taken on the AIDS as a topic, so Jonathan Demme really was taking a risk here. He made the smart move about keeping the movie true to the story and outlining how all of us are prejudice in one form or another. He also made a film about a man dying from AIDS, plain and simple.
Philadelphia does not stand on a high horse as a gay rights film, and if it did its mass appeal may well be ruined. I am very conservative by nature, but still this film makes me cry and reminds me that above all, people die a horrible death.
Hanks won a well deserved Oscar here, and I think he won mostly for the brief but pivotal scene where his lawyer (Denzel Washington) re-directs a line of questioning about skin lesions. I will not spoil for you, but if this scene fails to move you then nothing will.
I love courtroom dramas and this a great one. Denzel Washington is key - you see his character change over time from a greedy lawyer with prejudices to a compassionate friend. I do not think that the his character ever overcomes his prejudice, but grapples with it and learns what is right in spite of himself. Denzel gives a Oscar worthy performance as well.

This Disney classic is truly one of the most darkest but most loving films I have every seen. I don't want to say to much cause we all know that this film is very impressive no matter what level it's on.
A young prince is rude to an old lady who's trying to get out of the cold. He rejects her again and she turns into a beautiful princess (Godest) and then she transforms him into a Beast and he must have love in his heart and he must learn to love another. The other person (who is the gorgeous Belle) must love the Beast. The Beast looses all faith and keeps himself in his black, darken castle for many years.
Maurice then goes to the fair and gets lost in the woods and then Belle (who is the daughter of Maurice) goes out to look for him and ends up being a prisoner instead of her father. As the film progresses on, the Beast & Belle end up falling in love and we do have a magical ending.
i can't on how much I love this film. I think there where two sequels and they both sucked a lot of ass. The 1991 classic has a deep, emotional, loving story, characters are great, the settings are awesome and the music score of coarse is done well with both the themes of passion and darkness.
After the Lion King, this would be my second favorite.

An exceptionally well written, directed, and acted film. I am torn about the best picture category, but would not be disappointed if this film won. I would, however, feel that the Academy would be making a tremendous mistake if they did not honor Helen Mirren with a statue, in spite of the other fine actresses in the category. Ms. Mirren put a face on the most recognized yet most isolated monarch in the world. Kudos! I am far from a royalist sympathizer, but I do appreciate the human element this or any story provides. I was equally moved by the symbology employed by way of "stalking the stag." Princes Philip, Charles, William, and Harry, while at Balmoral would go out daily to stalk a 14-point stag for a hunting expedition in order to distract the younger princes from the horror of their mother's untimely and brutal death. Queen Elizabeth encounters the stag in one of the films most beautiful and emotional moments. The Queen's Range Rover breaks down as she tries to ford a river. While waiting for help, the stag appears. Standing before the Queen, the noble animal represents the British Monarchy; its ability to survive despite attempts on its life parallels the longevity of the Crown. The stag's tenuous hold on life mirrors the Queen's trouble at maintaining the monarchy e to rising unpopularity. Her attempt to honor the Spencer family's right to private mourning is seen as inaction and a lack of compassion by her subjects who mourn en masse. When the Queen acquiesces to Prime Minister Blair's recommendations to return to London and acknowledge the mourners she learns of the stag's death. Significant is the fact that the stag was not killed by a "royal" but by a "common" investment banker from London. An act portending the fate of the monarchy at the hands of the British subjects if the Windsors fail to modernize. It is not so much that the British, as portrayed in the film, were shouting down with the Queen, but were looking to their Sovereign for consolation ring their collective mourning. Mirren and the entire cast succeed at putting this small slice of British history into perspective, and for that this film succeeds.

Troy is without a doubt one of the greatest movies of all time. Those who think differently should be ashamed of themselves. This movie as most people know is based on Homer's the Illiad. The movie is way off from the book but who cares. This movie excels in every aspect.
I thought this movie excelled in the acting aspect. Every actor drew me into there character. I found myself cheering for Hector when he fights Achilles and was sad when he died. Many reviews did not like Brad Pitt's performance because he didn't let you get into his character. However if you know anything about the book you will realize that Achilles is just a tough, egotistical man and Brad Pitt portrayed that very well. Eric Bana was outstanding as Hector and I liked his character the best, and I liked how the director showed the struggle with him debating whether to fight Achilles or not. I'm not a huge Orlando Bloom fan but he portrayed a very good coward in the character of Paris. They picked the perfect woman to play Helen because hey, isn't Helen supposed to be extremely hot. Last but not least Brian Cox does a phenomenal job as Agamemnon. Brian Cox plays every bad guy in his movies to perfection.

1. 虎膽龍威(DIE HARD):
What makes Die Hard the all-time classic it has rightfully become was the lack of extravagance and fantasy: there were no decades-old war grudges, no jungle action, no superhuman powers and only the occasional physics-defying stunts we are usually overloaded with. The characters in this film were regular people, with regular jobs and regular attitudes, confronted with an extraordinary situation, responding as most regular people would, by doing things which go beyond what they would "regularly" consider. Each character's backstory is one that could easily be ours if we were born in their shoes, and we all know at least one or two people like someone from the film. These are the people we live with, work with, and interact with, and the film captured them perfectly. This realism makes it very easy for the audience to believe that it too could have been caught at that party and had to face the situation.
Die Hard took the action genre in a new direction, adding a human touch and bit of reluctance to their invulnerability, while also showing them (as Spider Man would do so as well later on) as people who are much better at making others' personal lives work out than they are with their own.
Even if you haven't seen Die Hard, you've seen its legacy in many other films since. The formula was a brilliant one, and this was its birth.

Quick setup. Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his team of bad-asses are sent to the South American jungles to rescue a group of POW's from an enemy hideout. Simple enough, but that's before they start getting picked off by a hunter from another planet. The rest of the movie relies on suspense, an over the top macho atmosphere and a entertaining team.
John McTiernan's style of creating a believable atmosphere shines out through the characters and dialogue. Every member of the rescue team is memorable and likable e to their humorous dialogue and over the top macho-ism. Dutch chomping on cigars, Blain wielding a mini gun, Mac shaving with his own sweat and Billy's huge knife are all examples of the manliness portrayed in the film.
The Predator is great in its first portrayal, brought to life thanks to Stan Winston's incredibly lifelike effect. His gadgets and weaponry stay cool and interesting right until the end. One of the things that make the film interesting is watching the team come up with new ways to kill this creature that's picking them off like flies.
The film is filled with memorable quotes and scenes that will linger in your mind any time you think of masculinity. Any fan of action or Schwarzenegger will know this is a must see and one of the quintessential 80's flicks.

Rushmore is an extremely well written movie about obsessive love.
The acting is a quality of Rushmore that contributes greatly to its appeal. I've seen a lot of Bill Murray movies, an I've always had a high opinion of him. Saying that Bill Murray is good in a movie usually means that he was really funny (which, with a few exceptions, goes without saying). In this film, though, there is something more to his performance. With his facial expressions alone capturing the tortured soul of Mr. Blume accompanied by his impeccable comic timing, Murray is plainly terrific. Jason Schwartzman is also outstanding as Max, although his appearance shows more years than the mere 15 he is supposed to be. Olivia Williams is subtle and extremely effective as the British object of affection. Finally, in a key role as Max's chapel partner, Dirk Calloway, Mason Gamble (from Dennis the Menace), convey's his bitterness and anger with such acuity and humor that one can't imagine that there he is actually acting in front of a camera.
The humor of Rushmore is so delightfully offbeat, hilarity sometimes being found in such places as silent pauses with the camera directed right at the actor's face, that it might not be for every taste (but be sure to give it a try first). In fact, everything about this movie is different. I've seen this film twice and from the surreal use of really vivid colors to the quick-paced direction by the obviously very talented Wes Anderson, it seems destined to have cult status in the future. Finally, I would like to mention the soundtrack, a compilation of primarily British "invasion" rock (along with a brilliant original score), for it almost perfectly captures the spirit and life of this amazing achievement.

I said that the world exists only as an illusion, but that doesn't apply to the objects (the cars, the jukebox). Tarantino is like an antiquarian that doesn't want to see his beloved treasures getting st.
Did I mention the virtuosity? The cinematography is ostentatious and generous, showing colorful scenarios. They don't try to be pervasive, on the contrary it is a "Hey, look what I'm doing" way all the time, and it works.
My only complaint is that I'm sure I'm gonna see a few semi-obscure movies from the 70s and think: "I've seen this before somewhere..." It is time for QT to do something that could be described as 'original'. Only Pulp Fiction fits in that category.

A young girl finds herself trapped in a mystical realm, where she must find a way to save her parents - who have been turned into pigs There's something almost criminal about the way Spirited Away took over two years to reach Britain after its original Japanese release. In Japan, Hayao Miyazaki is both commercially successful (his films regularly beat box office records) and highly respected (Akira Kurosawa said: "I am somewhat disturbed when critics lump our works together. One cannot mimimise the importance of Miyazaki's work by comparing it to mine."). In Britain, however, his work has barely got more than a few cursory arts venue screenings. At least Spirited Away - which took the Berlin Golden Bear in 2002 and the Best Animated Film Oscar in 2003 - made it. Better late than never. After the stress of making his last film, 1997's Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki had a breakdown and retired. But he came out of retirement when an idea to create another, lighter film began to take shape. Princess Mononoke was an action-packed epic that ranged across 15th century Japan. For Spirited Away he returned to the quieter - but no less serious - themes that he addressed to a degree in 1988's My Neighbor Tortoro. Both films feature a family moving house, girls getting used to upheaval, and elements of 'Alice In Wonderland'. But where the 1988 film used a few specific motifs from Carroll's book (a plunge into a 'rabbit hole', a version of the Cheshire cat), Spirited Away casts its 10-year-old protagonist, Chihiro (Hragi; or Chase in the US b), fully into a Wonderland, a mystical otherworld populated by animal spirits and gods. Chihiro arrives in this realm by accident. Her parents, heading for their new home, take a road that leads into the woods. Arriving at a dead end, they walk down a corridor through a building and emerge in what dad takes to be "an abandoned theme park". It's something like a Japanese Portmeirion, but eerily deserted. While her parents greedily help themselves to food, Chihiro wanders off and meets Haku (Irino; or Marsden), a boy who warns her to leave before dark. She's too late though - a lake has appeared, blocking her route, ghostly forms have populated the town and her parents have turned into pigs. She's trapped. The only way to survive, Haku tells her, is to get work in the bath house that dominates the town. Here "eight million gods rest their weary bones", according to Yubaba (Natsuki; or Pleshette), the witch who runs the establishment. Chihiro makes her way to meet Yubaba with the help of Kamajii (Sugawara; Ogden Stiers), a multi-limbed codger who runs the boiler house, Lin (Tamai; Egan), a serving woman with a taste for "roasted newt", and even a 'Radish God', a giant sumo of a chap with tuber-like appendages. Yubaba is hardly forthcoming - her realm is "no place for humans" - but she's forced to give Chihiro work, thanks to an oath she swore. Chihiro gets work helping Lin. But the management give them the worst jobs - such as assisting a hideous oozing creature they take to be a "Stink God; an extra large stinker at that". It's an entity so foul its smell makes food rot instantaneously, while its suppurations fill the room with a noxious gloop. Chihiro - or Sen as she becomes when Yubaba takes her name as part of her contract - does get by in the bath house, but it's not without further incident. She may lose her identity, but she retains her decency. One act of kindness results in a dangerous spirit, No Face, getting into the bath house and wreaking havoc by playing on the greed of the other employees ("Gold springs from his palms!"). She even gets involved in an adventure that reveals her mysterious bond with Haku. But can she save her parents? It's often said that Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira (1988) is the greatest anime ever. That's as maybe, but every one of Miyazaki's films is a masterpiece, so it's hard to pick just one that stands out. It's also tricky to compare his works with the more traditionally received notion of anime (giant robots, demons with phallic tentacles, telekinetic fighting, atom bomb-style explosions etc). Although Miyazaki insists it's not his role to be didactic, all of his work (notably his second feature Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind and Princess Mononoke) has strong messages about ecology and the human relationship with the natural world. But he's also fascinated with coming-of-age stories, notably about how girls (many of his protagonists are young females) can not only face up to alt responsibility, but also how they can become strong, principled members of society. Here Chihiro is forced to grow up fast, but the process, while gruelling, is not without real benefits, as her understanding of the way society functions and experience of alt emotions develops exponentially. Some aspects of the film are likely to be too foreign for Westerners - we're ignorant of Japanese belief systems, with their hierarchies of entities - but Miyazaki's work has the power to transcend such culturally specific elements. While many of his earlier films drew on European stories (such as 1986's Castle In The Sky, from Swift), the folkloric features he reworks are often universal. But most of all, his team's animation - here utilising more digital techniques, while still being grounded in 2D traditions - is always beautiful and, in places, breathtaking. Locations are atmospheric, details are immaculate (you can identify the flower species in the gardens) and characters are diverse. Yubaba, for example, is a bizarre creation, a stocky woman with a huge head and even bigger hairdo; the bath house itself is stocked with all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures, from a Kermit-like assistant, to creatures reminiscent of his cuddly woodland deity from My Neighbor Tortoro, to troll-like beasts that look related to Maurice Sendak's 'Wild Things'). The only factor that could be seen as mildly misjudged is J Hisaishi's score, which is overbearing in places. It's no wonder the likes of Pixar's John Lasseter (who executive proced the US b) are so full of praise for Miyazaki. He's a true genius, an artist and great filmmaker who happens to work in animation - a medium often belittled as childish in the West. What Barry mostly discovers from human society is, gasp!, that humans rob the bees of all their honey and eat it. He and Adam, his best pal (Matthew Broderick), even visit a bee farm, which looks like forced labor of the worst sort. Their instant analysis of the human-bee economic relationship is pure Marxism, if only they knew it. Barry and Adam end up bringing a lawsuit against the human race for its exploitation of all bees everywhere, and this court case (with a judge voiced by Oprah Winfrey) is enlivened by the rotund, syrupy voiced Layton T. Montgomery (John Goodman), attorney for the human race, who talks like a cross between Fred Thompson and Foghorn Leghorn. If the bees win their case, Montgomery jokes, he'd have to negotiate with silkworms for the stuff that holds up his britches. All of this material, written by Seinfeld and writers associated with his television series, tries hard, but never really takes off. We learn at the outset of the movie that bees theoretically cannot fly. Unfortunately, in the movie, that applies only to the screenplay. It is really, really, really hard to care much about a platonic romantic relationship between Renee Zellweger and a bee, although if anyone could pull if off, she could. Barry and Adam come across as earnest, articulate young bees who pursue logic into the realm of the bizarre, as sometimes happened on the "Seinfeld" show. Most of the humor is verbal, and tends toward the gently ironic rather than the hilarious. Chris Rock scores best, as a mosquito named Mooseblood, but his biggest laugh comes from a recycled lawyer joke. In the tradition of many recent animated films, several famous people turn up playing themselves, including Sting (how did he earn that name?) and Ray Liotta, who is called as a witness because his brand of Ray Liotta Honey profiteers from the labors of bees. Liotta's character and voice work are actually kind of inspired, leaving me to regret the absence of B.B. King, Burt's Bees, Johnny B. Goode, and the evil Canadian bee slavemaster Norman Jewison, who -- oh, I forgot, he exploits maple trees.
