中國最早放映的電影——1896年8月11日法國商人在上海徐園「又一村」茶樓內放映的「西洋影戲」。

中國第一部電影是戲曲片京劇《定軍山》，內有《請纓》、《舞刀》等片斷，1905年（清光緒三十一年），由北京豐泰照相館攝制。無聲片，長約半小時。

中國第一部獲得國際大獎的影片是20世紀30年代由蔡楚生導演的《漁光曲》，它在1935年莫斯科國際電影節上獲「榮譽獎」。
