上周讀完《苔絲》,一直想說點兒什麼,後來竟失語了。《苔絲》這樣的書,以前從來沒有卒讀,現在想來是那時看不懂。現在也沒有讀懂多少,但是也足以讓人失語。若說現在有什麼渴望,就是渴望自己的筆,能像哈代一樣一點不差地勾勒出苦難,就用哈代那樣單純的筆觸。 最大的苦難不是當事人覺知的苦難,是當事人根本不能覺知的苦難。

即便寫這樣一個故事,哈代也還是寫了那個悲劇女孩苔絲的快樂,她好好侍弄雞,甚至還和自己討厭的富家子弟Alec學會了吹口哨,還和同伴們去參加舞會。這要是換個人來寫,不知道會把這時的苔絲寫得怎樣苦大仇深。

可是哈代絕不,似乎他也憐惜筆下的人,長夜未央,先讓這個苦難的精靈快樂一會兒吧。苔絲和Alec 的交集埋下了她一生苦難的種子。這一段落結束的部分最精彩,就是苔絲決定回自己家,她告訴Alec,有兩句話實在太精彩,一是說,如果我曾經愛你,那麼我現在就不會如此痛恨自己。

從此,苔絲才正式開始自己的苦難生活。就像她最後一次寫給安吉爾的信中說的:我並沒有做錯什麼,可是你是怎樣待我的呢?這種遺棄在某種程度上比死還可怕,那個人還在,還承認她是名義上的妻子,可是在苔絲的任何境遇中,他均不在場。
