Having served as a hospital ship and transport in World War II, she is scheled to be scuttled and sunk far offshore. Max manages to get aboard the ship with the recording 1900 made long ago and plays it, hoping to attract 1900's attention. When it does, Max attempts to convince 1900 to leave the ship. But he is too daunted by the size of the world. And feeling that his fate is tied to the ship, 1900 cannot bring himself to leave the only home he has known. In the end, the Virginian blows up and sinks, with 1900 still aboard. Max feels useless that he couldn't save his friend.
The shopkeeper asks Max how the record got into the secondhand piano. Max indicates that he put it there, and the shopkeeper tells him that he wasn't so useless after all. Morricone's music permeates the movie, rising and falling with the moods of the characters. The proction on The Legend of 1900 is gorgeous. The special effects are great, but here it is a good thing. Long shots of the Virginian do not look quite real, instead it looks almost magical. This is Tornatore's first English film, and although it isn't outstanding, it is a nice effort.

1900年,一個被人遺棄在蒸氣船上的孤兒(蒂姆·羅斯飾)被船上一位好心的燒爐工(比爾·努恩飾)收養,取名為“1900”。然而好人不得好報,燒爐工在一次意外中死亡,只有幾歲大的1900又再度成為了孤兒。過人的天賦使他無師自通成了一名鋼琴大師,但宿命也令他天然地對紅塵俗世深懷戒意,他從不敢離船坦州上岸去,只因紐約無際的高樓和川流不息的人群令他沒有安全感。從此,1900展開了在海上彈奏鋼琴的旅程,吸引了愈來愈多慕名而來的旅客。而麻煩也接踵而至。

片中挑戰1900的那位爵士樂鋼琴家,歷史上確有其人,他就是傑利·羅爾·莫頓,《The Crave》本來就是他的作品,其父克拉倫斯也是早期爵士樂的重要人物之一,據說是第一位在譜子上使用爵士樂這個字眼的人。
電影中的弗吉尼亞號在歷史上確有其船,1904年出廠,1954年左右被廢棄。它還與泰坦尼克號有關,據說沉船時弗吉尼亞號就在附近能接收到無線信號的地方。
片中輪船的外觀設計靈感來自於盧西塔尼亞號及其姐妹茅利塔尼亞號。1900彈鋼琴的舞廳有著跟茅利塔尼亞號相似的圓形屋頂。
拍攝《海上鋼琴師》使蒂姆平生第一次訪問義大利,之前甚至沒有看過《雀信枝天堂電影院》,說服他的並不是托納多雷,而是那部獨白劇《1900:獨白》,這個講述無名鋼琴家的虛構故事深深打動了他。
雖然蒂姆·羅斯本來不會彈鋼琴,但經過拍片前半年的魔鬼特訓後應該是學會了。片子里對1900彈琴時手部的拍攝鏡頭充分說明了那是蒂姆·羅斯自己的手(他的手指不長)。要知道做到“形似”對初學者來說已經是很不容易了。
由於中途曾一度中止,劇組花了110天的時間用於拍攝。在羅馬搭建了19處外景,奧德薩11處。45名演員。75名工作人員。10000名群眾演員。2500套服裝。弗吉尼亞號使用的是一艘165米長的俄國退役般艇。
在烏克蘭時,由於環境惡劣,語言不通,對劇本的分歧,加之兩人脾氣都不好,蒂姆與托納托雷一度只在萬不得已時才同對方講話,劇組移師羅馬以後,他們的關系融洽了許多:旁觀者描述他們像好朋友一樣親密。
飾演令1900鍾情的女孩的梅蘭妮·蒂埃里是一名模特,多次出現在《Vogue》等雜志上,出演本片時她只有16歲。
包括紐約、南安普敦、那不勒斯等港口的外景,都是在羅馬搭建而成的。
最後在錄音合成時採用的大部分實際音響出自鋼琴家締尤特布塔。
該片耗資2千萬美元,遠遠超出了當時在義大利拍片的平均水平。
該片在義大利公映時長達3小時。最初,它的海外放映版已被托納多雷剪掉22分鍾,但該片的海外發行商Fine Line公司,仍堅持電影應該再刪改得戲劇化一些,並不顧《伯爾尼公約》關於“電影的最終剪緝權屬導演”的規定,威脅說否則將不會發行此片,包括各大電影節上的放映;它們要求至少再刪掉40分鍾。
該片原定在柏林電影節參展時長度為2小時45分鍾,托納多雷堅持自己的看法,不一惜一切代價也不刪戲,為此他錯過了這屆柏林影展。
穿幫鏡頭
46分鍾左右,又一批乘客到達美國後,一個老頭上來和1900聊天。聊了一段時間後,特寫顯示他手中的煙灰只有一小節,下兩個鏡頭(大概也就2秒左右),那煙灰已經變成很長一段。
與傑利·羅爾對決時,傑利·羅爾在第三次彈奏完以後站起來時把鋼琴的凳子往後推了一段距離,下一個鏡頭凳子卻出現在了原位。

《海上鋼琴師》的情節如同碧海潮生,高潮一浪接著一浪。在狂風暴雨中一邊任鋼琴自由滑動一邊彈奏,小孩子無師自通的演奏震驚滿船的人,這些只不過是大師的鋪墊罷了。自稱“爵士樂祖師”的傑利上船與1900比賽鋼琴,激動人心的程度簡直可以和最激烈的槍戰相媲美。 (新浪評)
