阿甘的媽媽靠出租房屋為生，於是阿甘經常和形形色色的房客混在一起。他喜歡衡鏈扒隨著一個小夥子的吉他 節奏姿態怪異的扭動身體，而不久之後，母子倆在電視里發現這個男房客竟成了大名鼎鼎的貓王 。 在學校的校車 上，阿甘見到了他一生中認為最美麗的女孩 --珍妮。從此兩人形影不離。阿甘無時不刻的保護著珍妮，卻對惹火燒身的麻煩無能為力，而此時珍妮便會向阿甘大喊：「快跑！阿甘快跑！」感謝上帝 眷顧著阿甘，因為賜予了他一雙健步如飛的長腿，總能將身後的惡棍甩得無影無蹤。 就這樣，阿甘跑進了大學 的橄欖球 場，他被大學破格錄取，成了球場上最善跑的明星 ，並受到了肯尼迪總統 的接見。在大學里，他目睹了美國法令准許黑人 學生進入白人 學校就讀的經過。不久之後，曾接見他的肯尼迪總統遇刺身亡。

拿到大學學位後的阿甘在一名新兵的鼓動下參軍 入伍。在軍營里，阿甘被教官譽為智商達到160的最聰明的士兵，因為上帝還賜給他一個單純正直，不存半點邪念的頭腦，他只知道服從，任何訓練科目他總能鶴立雞群。他還結識了熱衷捕蝦的布巴，兩個偏執狂之間產生了深厚的友誼 。 而此刻，阿甘一直深深迷戀的珍妮因為《花花公子》 拍攝裸照而被學校開除，在一家夜總會 做起了裸體 歌手。又一次阿甘幫珍妮擺脫了色狼 的糾纏，而珍妮卻慍怒的說他不可能永遠保護她。她囑咐即將遠赴越南 戰場的阿甘遇到危險就趕緊跑。

轉眼間，阿甘來到了越南。他的上司是鄧•泰勒中尉 ，一個很有責任敢的愛國者 。他告訴阿甘和布巴戰場的原則：保護好雙腳和不可愚蠢。對捕蝦著魔的布巴總在他周圍不停的念叨捕蝦利潤的豐厚，說打算回家後買條捕蝦船，讓阿甘作他的大副 。 戰爭 是殘酷的，他們遇到喚正了偷襲，阿甘想起了珍妮的話，甩開腿不停的跑，當他跑出很遠才發現只有他一人逃脫了敵人的火力范圍，他想起了布巴和泰勒中尉，於是又返回叢林一次次背回受傷的戰友。最後，他救出了奄奄一息的布巴，布巴只說了一句「我想回家」便死在了阿甘的懷里。

一顆子彈 鑽進了阿甘的屁股 ，而泰勒中尉卻被截肢。在醫院 里養傷的阿甘學會了打乒乓球 ，而且很快成了他的專長，甚至開始表演。暗自苦悶的泰勒不斷的埋怨阿甘不該救他，害他成了廢人。戰爭結束後阿甘成了英雄 ，約翰遜 總統親手授予他國會榮譽勛章。在一次反戰集會上，阿甘再次遇見了珍妮。當時她正和一群種族主義者 混在一起，兩人匆匆相遇又匆匆分手。 《阿甘正傳》劇照作為乒乓外交的使者，阿甘還到中國 參加了乒乓球比賽，為中美建交 立了功。

回國後的阿甘成了明星，在電視台里同約翰•列農 一起接受采訪。在電視台 門口，阿甘邂逅了久違的泰勒中尉，傷殘退伍後的他身心憔悴，他們在一起過了聖誕節 和新年。不久，阿甘受到了尼克松 總統的接見，而他在無意中迫使潛入水門大廈 的不法分子落入發網，最終導致了尼克松的下台。退役回家的阿甘果真實現了戰友布巴的遺願，買了條捕蝦船，並取名珍妮開始出海捕蝦，然而滿腔熱情換回的卻是一無所獲。來給阿甘作大副的泰勒讓他去教堂向上帝祈禱能夠有所轉機，而一場意外的龍卷風 卻讓他們因禍得福，只有阿甘的船倖免遇難。隨之而來的是擋都擋不住的收獲，阿甘發了財，有了12條船，成了百萬富翁 。

阿甘的母親因癌症 去世。阿甘不願為名利所累，做了義務割草工。珍妮回來了，送給他一雙跑鞋 。一天夜晚，珍妮投入了阿甘的懷抱，第二天清晨卻悄然離去。 阿甘決定跑步，但他不知道該跑向哪裡，3年多跑遍了美國的每個角落。終於一天，他感覺累了，准備回家。阿甘接到了珍妮的信，按照地址找到了珍妮和他們的兒子，值得欣慰的是小阿甘聰明機靈。

結婚之後他們度過了一段幸福時光，但一切阻止不了珍妮病情的惡化。阿甘將珍妮埋在兒時的樹下，經常來陪她聊天。 小阿甘也到了上學的年齡，阿甘送兒子上了校車，一根被夾在書里的羽毛 落到地上，被風吹起，又開始飛上天空。
