這又是一部改編自名著的音樂劇。原著《化身博士》(The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde)出自與狄更斯同時代的英國著名作家史帝文生的筆下，講述受人尊敬的科學家傑克醫生喝了一種試驗用的葯劑，在晚上化身成邪惡的海德先生四處作惡，他終日徘徊在善惡之間，其內心屬靈的內疚和犯罪的快感不斷沖突，令他飽受折磨。這種貌似荒誕無稽的故事其實蘊含了最深刻的人性命題：人，到底是是簡簡單單黑白分明一成不變的非善即惡，還是既善亦惡，時善時惡？「變身怪醫」也是文學領域中眾人皆知的藝術形象。
這部音樂劇最初是1990年在美國休士頓公演的，甫一推出便獲巨大成功，曾在35個城市進行巡迴演出，並於1997年4月登陸百老匯Plymouth劇院。此劇的榮譽除了四項東尼獎提名外，還有其主演羅伯特古齊奧尼(Robert Cuccioli)所獲得的最佳戲劇男演員獎，最令人矚目的當屬本劇的當家女主演林達伊德(Linda Eder)獲得的戲劇世界百老匯首演大獎。伊德是百老匯的當家花旦，在國內音響發燒友中的口碑極佳，她和「讓阿冉」韋爾金森一起錄制的音樂劇CD《變身怪醫》是又一張廣受推崇的人聲試機天碟。
不過，這些著名的演員均沒有出現在這張DVD里，它的主演是美國電視劇《海灘游俠》的主角大衛哈斯霍夫，憑心而論，哈斯霍夫的工作態度很認真，表演也非常賣力，尤其是末尾那首反映傑克醫生內心善惡交戰的歌曲，需要演員瞬間變換表情和聲音，哈斯霍夫的表現可圈可點。然而，認真的工作態度並不就能保證頂級的演唱水準，如果你聽過韋爾金森的錄音，又不是哈斯霍夫的鐵桿影迷的話，十有八九會對我們「游俠」的嗓音有些失望。

從《化身博士》一書中，我們不難看出史帝文生認為，在人的潛意識和某處黝暗深沈、無法探知的內心角落裡，善惡是並存的。書中主人翁——傑奇醫生，一個家財萬貫、名聞遐邇、道貌岸然的大善人，因抵擋不了潛藏在天性中邪惡、狂野因子的聳動，發明了一種葯水，可以將平時被壓抑在虛偽表相下的心性，毫無保留地展露出來；同時因著人格心性的轉變，身材樣貌也會隨之改變。因此，原本一個社會公眾認為行善不遺餘力的溫文儒雅之士，一旦喝下葯水，即轉身一變，成為邪惡、毫無人性且人人憎惡的猥鄙男子——海德；一個是善的代表，另一個則是惡魔的化身。

羅勃‧路易士‧史帝文生（1850–1894）
史帝文生，出生於英國蘇格蘭的全才作家，從小就體弱多病，日後更惡化為結核病。雖於二十五歲取得律師資格，但他一向對法律興味索然，而且那時已開始從事寫作，是以終其一生從未擔任過一天真正的執業律師。

好萊塢「說故事的方法」沿襲自亞里斯多德闡釋的「故事基本要素」：開端、中段和尾。而「三幕劇」
(Eugene
Scribe)所發展的「結構精良的戲劇」(well-made
play)，注重時間推移的連續感，每場戲都必須透過「描寫沖突的本質」而不只是「描寫沖突」來推進故事的進程，直到推向劇情的轉折點。而結尾會有一個清楚且合邏輯的收場，一切紛紛擾擾的事件又回歸平靜，社會重拾秩序，因此被命名為「復原型三幕式結構」，簡稱「三幕劇」。「三幕劇」結構是利用動作(action)來表達動機及人物所面對的沖突。
第一幕旨在「鋪陳」-主要人物介紹、故事的前提、戲劇性情境。第一幕結尾要有一個轉折點，一個事故或事件在第一幕的結尾，主角會主動做出一個似是而非的選擇，但觀眾都知道主角之後一定會後悔，因為他做出的只是權宜之計;此時，觀眾在心理上會同情主角。而第一幕後段的這個似是而非的決定，會讓劇本的第二幕變得復雜，因為當主角做出這個決定後，就會有個人無法控制的災難發生，發生的事情不是主角能掌握的，但他已無法重新做決定，也就是說，當他認識到自己的錯誤時，才是他真正的考驗，他必須想辦法面對並改變。
第二幕在「製造對立」，故事的主體，電影劇本的抗衡(confrontation)，戲劇的基礎-沖突(conflict)、阻礙第二幕結束時，會再有一個轉折，是主角彌補當初所做的「似是而非的決定」;此時，觀眾的心理和主角是平行的，他能同理主角的錯誤與悔改。「第二幕的高潮在於人物終於面臨錯誤的選擇所種下的惡果。此時也提供人物內省的機會，以便邁向第三幕的解決和復塬。在叄幕劇中，當人物在第二幕結尾承認錯誤時，不只是內心上的救贖，
更代表人物將有能力改變外在的世界，修正以前所犯的錯誤。」
第三幕則是「解決問題」-事件如何結束、人物怎麼了?第三幕的結尾，主角會做出一個觀眾不會做的決定，於是主角在結尾時變成英雄，讓觀眾產生崇敬的心態。「三幕劇」呈現出一個人從開始到結束的旅程，他歷經幾個重要的轉折，這轉折為他帶來轉變。人物的外在旅程可能回到原點，但內心一定有所改變。以李安的《喜宴》為例，此片透過「親情」與「個人自由」兩命題的反覆辯證，以「喜宴」這個儀式，鋪排中西方文化和兩代間的倫理觀念，如何歷經沖突、挫敗和妥協，最後以寬容的方式接納差異的存在。

男孩捧腹大笑：「Ha ha，so funny，Ha ha，so funny！」

Wolf：（從樹後出來，邊走邊說）I am very hungry now. (做找尋的樣子)Where is Grandma』 s house? (高興地對觀眾說)Aha , it』s here.(敲門)Bang, Bang, Bang．
Grandma： Who is it？
Wolf：（裝出Little Red Riding Hood的聲音，一邊得意地搖動尾巴，一邊說）It』s me. Little Red Riding Hood.
Grandma： (邊說邊起床) Come in, come in.
Wolf：(得意洋洋地走到床邊) Grandma , I』ll eat you.
Grandma： （驚慌失措地抓緊衣服，瞪著眼睛，邊叫迫從床上滾到地上）
灰狼把外婆吞到了肚子里。
Wolf：（得意地拍拍肚子，翹起大拇指）Yummy！I』ll sleep.
Little Red Riding Hood：(高興地敲門)Grandma．Grandma．
Wolf：(裝扮成Grandma的聲音) Who is it？

Hunter：Grandma ,give me some needles and thread． Little Riding Hood, Give me some stones．
