《吻別》是我1988年作的曲子，是因為一部叫做《末代皇帝》的電影給我的影響。1988年這部由義大利導演拍攝的作品，獲得六十屆奧斯卡最佳影片、最佳導演、最佳原始音樂九項大獎，而獲得最佳音樂殊榮的是為此片配樂的日本音樂大師坂本龍一。坂本龍一是我非常敬仰的音樂大師，他的作品也是我非常喜歡的。在電影中故事情節穿插著配樂可以在影片起到點睛的作用，這也是音樂的另一種體現形式。身為音樂人的我覺得這種音樂表現形式很不錯，就想用自己的方式作有中國特色的電影配樂，然後按自己的音樂理念融入了大量中國傳統器樂作了一首分為四個章節的曲子，也就是《吻別》曲子的前身。當時我正在寶麗金任職，為學友擔任製作，一直想作一首很適合學友的音樂，在學友要發行專輯的時，我就把這個當初為電影而作的配樂重新編寫成為《吻別》的曲子給學友，我個人覺得這首曲子是非常適合學友本人的。說真話在當時這首曲子並不是很符合那個年代的流行趨勢，自己也沒期望會成為大紅的歌曲。這首歌推出後，意外地受到很多人的喜歡，並且流行起來，取得了不錯的成績。
