三首悼亡詩比較為人所知的是前二首。潘安對結發妻子一往情深，楊氏是晉代名儒楊肇的女兒，十歲就許配給潘家。楊氏一家門第清高，男女都有真才實學。潘安與楊氏伉儷和諧，始終如一。不料楊氏早逝。
李商隱詩「只有安仁能作誄，何曾宋玉解招魂」，說的就是楊氏死後潘岳做的三首悼亡詩，情深意切，顯然比宋玉招魂要靠譜多了。
我讀潘岳的悼亡詩，與其說是愛他的詩句，不如說是稱許他對愛的節操。美男子難得，痴情美男更是難得。潘岳的《悼亡三首》上承了《詩經?邶風?綠衣》，下開了元稹的悼亡詩。自他之後，悼亡竟成了夫悼妻的代言。
綠兮衣兮，綠衣黃里。心之憂矣，曷維其已！
綠兮衣兮，綠衣黃裳。心之憂矣，曷維其亡！
綠兮絲兮，女所治兮。我思古人，俾無訧兮！
絺兮綌兮，凄其以風。我思古人，實獲我心！
——《詩經?綠衣》
《綠衣》是中國最早的一首悼亡詩。對後世影響極為深遠。詩說一男子手撫妻子遺物衣裳，悲戚不已，追憶舊時情誼，感念妻子對自己的照顧和耐心規勸，感傷著再也沒有另一個人如此的賢德美惠，可以理解自己的心了。
〈紅樓夢〉中寶玉曾作〈芙蓉女兒誄〉，也可一讀。
