還記得1976年，約翰•吉爾勒明耗費相當於當今6500萬美元巨資翻拍的《金剛》，除了將金剛大戰戰機的場景從帝國大廈搬到在「9•11」中被覆滅的「世貿雙子」外，其它故事發展和場景設置幾乎與原版相同，但是，這部使用了當時最為先進的電影特技的《金剛》被觀眾斥為「簡單的幻想片」，與原版的《金剛》完全沒可比之處，這或許是觀眾對原版《金剛》愛護有加的表現之一吧。想當初梅里安•庫珀僅消耗了68萬美元拍出那部傳世的黑白經典《金剛》，銀幕上的大猩猩實際僅有十幾米高，而用來拍攝握住安的近鏡卻由一隻8米長的「巨臂」完成，那強壯的軀體也只由塑料加上兔毛粘制而成，可想而知這只大怪物有多「簡陋」。然而，在觀眾心目中，這只金剛好得無可比擬。實在佩服大半個世紀前威利斯•布里恩為該片做出的有史以來第一個振奮人心的視覺特效。可惜當初奧斯卡還沒有最佳視覺特效獎，憑1933版《金剛》天馬行空的想法和特效，絲毫不比當今的好萊塢CG電影差多少……

導演卡爾一行人來到「骷髏島」，發現島上的土著人崇拜一種神秘的大神，它的名字叫做「Kong」，後來卡爾將這個「神」，也就是25英尺高的大猩猩抓住，運到紐約展覽，把它的名字改為「King Kong」，意為「Kong王」，中國人借「金剛不壞之身」之意將其譯作「金剛」。
至於為什麼土著人會把這只大猩猩稱為「Kong」，並沒有確切的說法，可能這是模仿這只大動物走路的像聲詞。不過也不排除「KingKong」這個名字就是取自中文「金剛」的可能性。
