好萊塢八大電影公司
好萊塢最早的八大影業是指米高梅（MGM）、派拉蒙（Paramount）、福克斯（20th Century Fox）、華納（Warner Bros.）、聯美（United Artists）、環球（Universal）、哥倫比亞（Columbia）和雷電華（RKO）八家。
這八家電影公司創立組成的美國電影協會（MPAA）為所有在美國上映的影片分級，並為美國電影的利益進行游說。當時的八大影業全是壟斷企業，特別是前5家公司，不但壟斷了電影製作、發行各個環節還擁有自己的院線，直到20世紀50年代才迫於美國反壟斷法而出售了自己的院線（但目前大電影公司又開始介入影院經營，如索尼已擁有美國最大院線20%的股份）。由於失去院線加上電視普及的沖擊，八大公司陷入了前所未有的困境並導致雷電華在50年代破產，但因為迪斯尼（Walt Disney）的崛起，填補了雷電華留下的空位。
之後好萊塢開始進入蕭條期，20世紀70年代，原來的第一大公司米高梅逐漸衰落，而被聯美收購，但聯美的好日子尚未開始，就因為投資了影史上最最虧本的「巨片」《天堂之門》而破產，反而要米高梅來收拾殘局，組成了米高梅/聯美（MGM/UA），八大影業變為七大。與此同時，一些小公司在20世紀六、七十年代建立並嶄露頭角，象三星（TriStar）、新線（New Line)、卡洛可（Carolco）、奧利安（Orion）等，但它們始終沒有達到七大的規模，三星和新線直到被大公司收購才有了進一步的發展。
20世紀80年代初，好萊塢開始復甦——大購並開始了。先是依舊衰弱的米高梅被CNN的母公司特納廣播收購，特納已經有了新線和城堡岩（Castle Rock——《肖申克的救贖》、《綠里奇跡》等名片的製作公司）兩家電影廠，並很快發現米高梅的爛攤子很難消化，於是特納在留下米高梅唯一值錢的東西——世上最大的影片庫來充實自己的電視節目後（這就是為什麼許多米高梅/聯美的老片的DVD是由華納發行的原因），就把米高梅轉手給了一家義大利金融財團，唯一讓米高梅感到一絲希望的是特納沒有奪走007的嬡ā?br />
1985年，即使《星球大戰》三部曲的發行也未能使福克斯擺脫破產的陰影，澳洲人默多克的新聞集團及時出現並收購了它，媒體大亨默多克確實有起死回生的絕招，在新聞集團的運作下，福克斯不但恢復了昔日的輝煌，還在此基礎上建立了美國第四大電視網FOX。日本的索尼收購了CBS唱片後也在1989年從可口可樂手裡收購了哥倫比亞和三星，組成了索尼影業（Sony Pictures/Columbia-TriStar），盡管新公司一開始連續多年的虧損讓索尼不堪重負，但索尼並不願放棄。而索尼的同鄉松下在收購環球及其母公司MCA後，發現盈利遙遙無期，也未能給其影音硬體的銷售帶來多大好處，便將MCA售與了加拿大酒業巨頭西格瑪。迪斯尼通過《小美人魚》也重展雄風，並且為了區別其兒童片的發行，迪斯尼成立了專門發行「大人片」的試金石（Touchstone）和好萊塢影業（Hoolywood Pictures），並將三個發行品牌集合為博偉發行公司（Buena Vista——BV）。
但進入90年代後，憑借《本能》、《終結者》系列等成功巨片春風得意的卡洛可卻開始遇到了大麻煩，它的規模無法承受連續進行的大投資，《割吼島》的失敗讓它血本無歸、掏空家底，《星門》的上映讓卡洛可徹底破了產，它的影片庫出售給了米高梅。時代華納在90年代收購了特納廣播，新線和城堡岩也就加入了時代華納。
從20世紀90年代中後期至新世紀，七大公司全部都成為了跨國傳媒集團的一部分：迪斯尼收購了美國最大的獨立片商Miramax和ABC電視網；派拉蒙被擁有MTV的維亞康姆（Viacom）收購，並建立了UPN電視網；福克斯重組為福克斯娛樂集團並建立了美國第三大獨立片商福克斯探射燈（Fox Searchlight）；時代華納與美國在線（AOL）合並；西格瑪收購了寶麗金後，由於發生巨額虧損，又被法國媒體巨頭維旺迪購並，重組為一家新公司維旺迪-環球（Vividen-Universal）；米高梅盡管仍未恢復元氣（其市場份額甚至不及Miramax等獨立片商，海外發行權也委託給了福克斯），但也建立了自己的有線電視網，並且既收購了卡洛可影片庫後，又收購了奧利安、寶麗金影業等破產公司的影片庫，重新擁有了世上最大的電影庫。當然，新成立不久的夢工廠（DreamWorks）也開始顯露實力，但無論從其市場份額還是涉及業務的深度廣度來說要成為新的第八大還有距離。
2004年，長久的談判之後，其間經歷索尼的猶豫和華納的放棄，索尼影業終於傾30億美元巨資，並負擔了米高梅的20億高額債務，確定了對米高梅集團的收購，而最終的收購工作也將在2005年年中完成。通過這次收購，索尼取得了米高梅豐厚的影片庫，也為進一步佔領電影之場做好了准備。這次收購也就意味著，曾經的八大又少了一家。
因此，現在八大影業已成一種俗語，指的是好萊塢的主流片商，真正稱的上「大」的目前只有6家，也就是美國電影協會（MPAA）目前的6個成員：索尼影業（Sony/Columbia）(包括米高梅（MGM/UA）)，福克斯（20th Century Fox）、迪斯尼（Disney/Buena Vista）、華納（Warner Bros.）、派拉蒙（Paramount）、環球（Universal）。
