Gua Sha (The Treatment) shows how a person's cultural beliefs are so deeply set within oneself that it is usually impossible to examine why you do most anything, from how you dress and talk to whom you love and respect and how you show it. The invisible nature of one's cultural beliefs also makes it difficult to impossible to explain yourself to others when questioned. Da Tong experiences an excruciatingly painful and difficult struggle while trying to protect his son, an ordeal that forces him to examine the validity of some of the most vital things he thought he knew about his identity, his Chinese culture, and the new American world he'd chosen as his home.
The movie showed me how normal it is for people to look for ways that their culture is superior to others' and how the misunderstandings arising from different cultural perspectives can seem very large, but can be nullified with simple, 2-sided explanations when people are willing to listen.
It appears this film is not readily available in the USA, but it's the best I've seen at highlighting the differences between American and Chinese culture. Parts of the movie's dialog are only in Chinese and I've yet to find a DVD with English subtitles, although it's easy to get the gist of what's going on ring those short passages. The credits are a combination of Chinese and English, holding true to the integration of both worlds. I've noticed some important roles are not credited here on IMDb, such as Judge Horowitz, who was played by Alexander Barton.

THE TREATMENT (GUA SHA)
by Rich Cline
A Chinese film shot completely on location in St. Louis, this is an off-beat hybrid that never quite works, even though it has a worthy and intriguing central premise. A young, successful Chinese immigrant couple (Tony Leung Ka Fai and Jiang Wenli) give their 5-year-old son (Dennis Zhu) a painless, ancient Chinese treatment called gua sha, which leaves marks on the boy's back. This alerts the authorities, who take the child away and charge the parents with abuse and neglect. Numerous court hearings ensue, followed by lots of overwrought melodrama, which will probably please Eastern audiences much more than Western ones. The acting is uneven (the Asian cast is superb; most of the Americans are, frankly, awful), as are the proction values (very slick camera work sits at odds with a cheesy musical score). First-time director Zheng Xiaolong will probably find success back home with this cautionary tale of life in the Promised Land. But few Americans or Europeans will take its TV movie-of-the-week sensibilities very seriously.
Review by Rich Cline
Gua Sha had its world premiere at the St Louis International Film Festival
A compelling tale of culture clash in middle America, Gua Sha centres on a young Chinese couple (Leung and Jiang) who immigrate to St Louis with their bright young son (Zhu), who they're raising to be a proper American. Then a doctor treating the boy for a minor bump notices strange scarring on his back, social services step in to protect the child and a legal battle ensues, dragging the parents through the courts to prove them as abusive and neglectful, which of course they're not. The marks are from an ancient (and painless) Chinese medical treatment called gua sha.
OK, so it's not much more than a made-for-TV premise, and the filmmaking is pretty tame in many respects, tracing the obvious melodramatic storyline from the family's delirious happiness through the most bleak darkness imaginable. First-time director Zheng has an excellent technical crew behind him, but the performances are extremely uneven (the Asian cast is superb; most Yanks seem like they're from a local amateur theatre group). And finally, the cheesy musical score combines with overwrought plot points to alienate Western viewers, leaving us quite intrigued by the themes and story possibilities, but disappointed by the film itself.

Gua Sha, known as kerik in Indonesia, Cao Gio in Vietnam (see Harvey Keitel's The Three Seasons) and khoud lam in Laos is a legitimate and effective therapy. In Asia it is usually done with a coin, Chinese soup spoon, slice of water buffalo horn, or even a slice of ginger. A simple cap with a rounded edge is quite good to use and available in most homes in the West. It was not commonly done with wood, but if smooth and the right edge it could be. There is a teaching text in English called Gua Sha. A Traditional Technique for Modern Practice, and a teaching video: Gua Sha: Step-by-Step, by Arya Nielsen. If an acupuncturist is trained in Classical Chinese medicine, they will do this technique in their practice for pain, and for acute or chronic illness.

Gua Sha - The Treatment (2001)

Life is full of surprises. I religiously scour the German television scheles (which I receive by satellite) for oddities, particularly on the German/French arts channel Arte. I have found most of my silent collection there; for example, last week they showed a 2007 restoration of Intolerance (1916) and their selection of unusual cinema is matchless. The only problem with them (and all of the other German channels) is their propensity for overbbing rather than relying on subtitles.
I noticed the above Taiwanese film in the afternoon scheles and didn't bother to check it out; I just noted that it was starring Tony Leung and I assumed it would be something pretty special. Well for a start it wasn't the Tony Leung of the recent Wong Kar Wai and Ang Lee films but the actor of the same name who starred in "The Lover" (1992), who is also a fine actor but not the one I was expecting. The next surprise is that this was a modern-day drama, set and filmed in St. Louis, Missouri and written primarily in English, which led to the very pleasant surprise that the movie was not bbed but used German subtitles for the dialogue which switched between English and Mandarin (and I was able to cope with these for the brief non-English dialogue).
But enough about the background: the final surprise was how involving the story was. Leung plays a prize-winning computer game designer, who, together with his equally intelligent wife and US-born 6-year son, is trying to assimilate into the American life style and the American dream. He has brought over his non-English-speaking father from the mainland and hopes to obtain a green card for him. When the child falls at home and is taken to hospital for stitches, the doctors note the extreme bruising on his back and conclude that he has been abused; and the do-gooder social workers immediately remove the cosseted child from his home and very loving parents. All attempts to explain that the bruising is the result of an ancient Chinese health treatment known as Gua Sha -- and in fact administered by the grandfather -- do not impress the ignorant court and they deem the child permanently at risk. The Child Services lawyer takes pleasure in presenting the father as a violent man -- based on the kind of games he designs -- and provokes him into losing his temper in court which hardly helps his case. I don't want to go on to explain how this situation develops and how it resolves itself, even if the film does not appear to be on DVD at present, as the possible spoilers are many. I will just mention that the penultimate scenes involve Leung in a Santa Claus suit climbing up the drainpipe to the family's ninth floor apartment with a toy monkey in his arm -- real heart in your throat action. I could do with a lot more surprises like this one.

Review Summary
Hong Kong indie film icon Tony Leung stars in this Chinese proction about cultural misunderstanding and intolerance. Datong (Leung) is a patrician of a St. Louis Chinese-American family and a designer of violent video games. When Datong's father (Zhu Xu) visits from China, he performs some traditional Chinese medicine on his young grandson. Though painless, the treatment leaves bright red marks on the skin, which are interpreted by the kid's teacher as welts. Soon the Child Welfare Agency is accusing the family of child abuse and transfers the kid to a foster home. This film was screened at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
At first sight name, thought it was ethical film, Gua Sha, Chinese traditional medicine a craft, in the long river of 2000 years of history, has remained robust health in China's vast territory to survive, but one day, it appears in a free and democratic American society, they have been misunderstood, so staged a family joys and sorrows, good news is that Tony Leung will perform the role of the father moving chord, Jiang Wenli also consistent screen image of the character is almost starred in, it is an accurate grasp of as his wife's hate, love, heart-broken and distressed, but the roles of mother to play down a little a bit. When forced to separation as the conditions in exchange for a child, his wife resolutely, "fiercely" to turn "I agree!" When things forced to have to really want to leave her husband, the wife painfully holding her husband could not bear her husband a life . From her husband in court infuriated the enemy fall into the trap of others start to his wife's anger was crazy the last disheartened, like a wife to her husband in frustration ~ because she knew her husband would let children of any performance from their own farther and farther.
Tony Leung Ka Fai is on the inside can be cut off from their return to their side as long as the child's father, but played down the role of her husband, with things progressing with the film step by step to a climax, the court was 'the enemy' forced control do not live mood, for others accused him of being an irresponsible father angry, for others the desecration of China's traditional culture indignation! Matter to the negative direction, he blame his friends, hate the United States, is not compatible! Living in the U.S. eight years, has encountered many difficulties and hardships, the number of difficult and setbacks he enred, and upheld, but this time he could no longer compromise, he could stand up and resist! Stand up and fight! Because they take away is that their children, their own flesh and blood! So he's irrational behavior we are all understandable.
Film has a few bright spots, one of which is the father carrying a child on the road and the police chase, chasing so much as it is for our children, the children do not understand anything, he felt fun, so the father can not care about anything, forgetting all the way to meet the children's joy! Only a car will eventually be stopped, their families have to face the nightmare still exist. Separated spouses, the child has finally returned home, but his father left, Father and Son can not meet, the wife went to see the decadent husband, along with drinking alcohol, so alcohol tingling throat anesthesia body. They want to cry want to resist, but can not, and only if all of the grievances of all the anger inside the pharynx to the stomach.
Originally his father and grandfather would like to take the kids went back to China together, but the grandfather firmly said: can not be done! Life is this way, anything can happen, you hide are not immune to the.
Anything can happen, laying bare the untold stories behind this event! Can not escape can not hide, we are the love of his family, acceptance of all the misfortunes of our courage.
Because of love, the father dressed as Santa Claus, from the sewer climbed back to his own home. Fortunately, the story has a happy ending. He did not disappoint and regret.
The film is in the context of Western cultural differences, in addition to the performance of his son can not be split between husband and wife's love, he also seen the Chinese people's moral integrity, but also a success.

Impression On the Film Gua Sha Treatment
"Person in the United States, it is very difficult to blend into local culture." I read in the circle to be optimistic about the film "Gua Sha," after the greatest feeling. With the advance of the screen, the interpretation of the story, an American of Chinese society now ran the family encountered.
After years of hard work, Xu Datong, a Chinese immigrant to the US, has finally achieved success as an outstanding video game designer. With his promising career and loving family, he feels he has become a true American. Datong』s father comes over from China, and uses a traditional Chinese medical technique, called guasha, to treat Datong`s son, Dennis. Unexpectedly, an American doctor thinks the bruises on Dennis` back left by the guasha treatment are signs of child abuse, and the finger is pointed at Datong. The Treatment is a moving portrayal of the enormous gulfs between cultures and their possible repercussion between cultures and their possible repercussions.
The film 「Gua Sha-the Treatment」 reflects the difference of value and culture views between western society and orient society. China society has been receiving impact of Confucianism for thousands years. Confucianism is known as paying regard to human relationship and ethic. Piety, courtesy and loyalism are most important ethic. But in Western culture which is more emphasis on indivialism, independence and equality. So conflicts in culture and value are unavoidable. These conflicts have shown in the story.
In Chinese culture, physical punishment is commonly used by Chinese family. They think this will help to growing up. But in western society it is absolutely forbidden. Any abusing children was viewed as illegal conct. As to show respect to friends, Da Tong Xu punished his own son physically in front of friends. But this was misinterpreted as violence by his foreign friends. This is a misunderstanding in culture between East and West.
How to avoid the tragedy of the story? We must strengthen the East-West cultural exchange and learning, and only with respect to different cultures and inclusive will it be possible to avoid the culture and values of conflict.
Gua Sha Treatment / Gua Sha

Masterpiece on Cultural misunderstandings
Author: zzmale
Gua Sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patient's acupuncture/acupressure/massage points. It works in similar principles like that of acupuncture/acupressure/massage. This method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story begins here, when the visiting grandpa who does not speak any English used this traditional practice to treat the grandson when both son and daughter-in-law were at work.
Sadly, in US, this is a story that repeats itself many times in the area where many oriental immigrants lives and all of these are e to simple misunderstanding between cultures.

Gua Sha is a movie about the differences between American and Chinese culture. Xu datong is a video games designer in St. Louis. When his father visits from China, he performs Gua Sha (a Chinese traditional treatment) on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. In the court, Datong loses his mind so that finally he loses custody of his son. I think this scene is shocking and thought-provoking to most of the Chinese audiences. But the most impressing scene to me is the ending. Datong wants to see his son in Christmas eve, he has to climb a pipe to the ninth floor which his son lives. I think the pipe is not only a pipe, but also a gap, a deep gap between American and 5000-year Chinese culture. He wants to climb over the gap and he will never succeed, perhaps no Chinese people really could succeed.
