It was the first film of Audrey Hepburn, not only she won movie queen, but also
then her beautiful and cultured manners brought the 「Hepburn hot」 in the
1950s.
The director William Wyle melted
the Famous landscape into this film vividly, Gregory Peck and Audrey
Hepburn』s actings are both very well, and they made this romantic love comedy
very warm and fragrant. I think it is a very classic film.

Spalding Gray writes of a "perfect moment" which one strives to have on a holiday -- a moment in time where there's not a stitch out of place, and you can go home knowing the holiday has been worthwhile. For me, much of Roman Holiday is one sustained perfect moment.

In fact, it's hard to believe the entire film takes place over little more than 24 hours. During this short day, Princess Ann rebels from her old life, falls in love and grows up enough to accept her destiny. And she even has time to stop for a haircut and an ice cream en route. Audrey Hepburn's transformation from a VERY young looking girl (honest, she looks 14 when she gets ready to go to bed near the start of the film) to a desirable woman is truly remarkable. No wonder Gregory Peck's character (and, arguably, Gregory Peck himself) fell in love with her. He wasn't alone. The film is nearly 50 years old, and it still holds that same power.

In her first major film outing, Hepburn displays fine comic timing, and a sense of bizarre humor. Check out the subtle scene where Ann accepts what she claims is her first cigarette ... and then smokes it like an expert! Considering the temperature averaged around 100 F ring filming, she also seems to enjoy her ice cream cone a little TOO much.

For me the perfect moment of perfect moments is when Audrey (NOT Princess Ann) reacts with sudden fright when Gregory Peck appears to get his hand bitten off in the Mouth of Truth -- only to break into laughter when Peck pops his hand out of his "empty" sleeve with a perfectly timed, "Hello!" Apparently, this was a practical joke Peck and Wyler played on Audrey. For a few seconds, the real Audrey Hepburn is on screen for the world to see. It's a moment to cherish.

Peck is his usual solid self -- and as a reporter myself, I can identify with the pressure Joe puts himself under to protect his big scoop. I should be so lucky as to find myself on the receiving end of a princess's affections. It's hard to believe that the Eddie Albert who plays Peck's bearded (and skillful) photographer is the same guy who went on to do "Green Acres." He's excellent here, and I'd give my eye teeth to have a cool lighter camera like his.

It's sad the film was never made in color, but the black and white gives it such a classy feel, you don't miss it. And if you don't know the ending -- don't let anyone spoil it for you. Just have the hankies ready.

This is one of the best films of the 1950s -- a relic of a carefree era long past and the precious debut of an actress who is still mourned years after her loss. .

Audrey Hepburn became a star with this film, in which she played Princess Anne, weary of protocol and anxious to have some fun before she is mummified by "affairs of state." On a diplomatic visit to Rome, Anne escapes her royal retainers and scampers incognito through the Eternal City. She happens to meet American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who, recognizing a hot news story, pretends that he doesn't recognize her and offers to give her a guided tour of Rome. Naturally, Joe hopes to get an exclusive interview, while his photographer pal Irving (Eddie Albert) attempts to sneak a photo. And just as naturally, Joe falls in love with her. Filmed on location in Rome, Roman Holiday garnered an Academy Award for the 24-year-old Hepburn; another Oscar went to the screenplay, credited to Ian McLellan Hunter and John Dighton but actually co-written by the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo. The 1987 TV movie remake with Catherine Oxenberg is best forgotten.

when people comment on this movie here, people all failed to mention another historic event which just happpend before the release of that movie in 1950s. Princess Anne of the British Royal family fell in love with a common man(who unfortunately was divorced--one needs to understand that in 1950s, divorces was like a dirty record in your credit history, which will damage your public image and credibility). It was also not acceptable at that to see a marriage between a common man and a lady with blue blood. IN constrast to King Edward who gave up royal position for her beloved one, she finally gave up this relationship under the tremendous pressure.
The cruel thing was that all news media published her give-in in headlines and it flashed on the street too. It was a sensational event in Uk and US.
Roman holiday almost replicated that story with unbelievably similar details. That's why it was so popular and so touching for many people in Europe and US.
this movie launched Audrey, an unknown and obscure swiss lady into stardom over night. She got Oscar that year and started her legend.

第一篇:
A Holiday worth celebrating every day of the year. The Princess awakens from her slumbers in this classic fall-from-innocence, coming-of-age tale with a royal twist. Audrey Hepburn stakes her claim as the most perfect woman who ever lived. Gregory Peck at his best as the ne'er-do-well American reporter who guides her chastely from girlhood to womanhood. What can I add? One of the finest movies ever made. Now will you please stop reading this review and rent the movie, for heaven's sake? ...Now, according to the rules, this review has to go for at least 10 lines. And yet I've said everything I have to say about Roman Holiday. It is perfect. Rent it. Or better yet, buy it. You won't regret it. There, now that's 11 lines, that ought to do it.

第二篇:
With a very nice blend of fantasy and reality, and two very likable stars, "Roman Holiday" is both entertaining and thoughtful. Sometimes it is very funny, and at other times it makes you feel a great sympathy and warmth towards the characters. Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck are ideal in the leading roles, and the story is very clever in getting a lot of mileage out of a simple idea without pushing things too far, which makes it quite effective.

The idea of Princess Ann (Audrey) slipping away unnoticed and unrecognized for a day of fun and freedom from responsibility is of course fanciful, but it works for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is Peck's role as a pragmatic newsman. He is a good balance for Hepburn's charm and energy, remaining calm and logical without ever becoming cold or distant. You feel as if you could spend a lot more than a couple of hours in their company. And how could you improve on Eddie Albert's performance as Peck's photographer friend? The movie also adds in the atmosphere of Rome itself, with some creative scenes that make good use of the setting.

There are many fine moments in a story that at times seems almost like a daydream, and then it brings the characters back to reality in a moving way. It's not an easy combination to pull off, but here it all fits together very well, to make the kind of classic worth remembering, and one which you can watch and enjoy more than once.

Roman Holiday

Thanks to some recommendations from my friends , I have recently enjoyed lots of nice films. And last week, the film 『Roman Holiday』 has impressed me a lot. As a remarkable work in the film history, this film is really worth watching.

It can be summarized in such a delightful story (This may be a spoilerJ): Princess Anne, who was performed by Audrey Hepburn, was getting bored with her restricted schele when she was on a publicized tour to Rome. One night, she sneaked out of her luxurious residence and fell asleep on a public bench in central Rome.

However, she was found by Joe Bradley, an American newspaper reporter, who was performed by Gregory Peck. Joe took her home without knowing who she truly was.

Anyway, he was subject to make a big fortune by secretly interview the princess when the truth turned out. But instead of that, after showing Ann around the city and having a good time with her, he forced himself to say farewell to her, for he knew the romance between them oughtn』t to be happened because of their great difference in standing, even though they had fallen in love with each other.

The end of the romantic film is really disappointing to most of the audience, though it ought to be imagined at first. However, Audrey Hepburn had successfully performed Ann as a naughty, naive and sweet angel, who ordered a glass of expensive champagne without thinking, who curiously had her first cigarette, who fell in love with a poor but kind man, and who finally firmly returned to the place she hated, only because of her responsibility.

She was really charming and graceful, not only from her innocent eyes and expressions, but also from her particular character.

Waterloo Bridge is one of the finest movies I have ever seen. Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor make sheer magic together on screen, and both give touching performances. My favorite part is when Myra sees Roy in the station, after thinking that he was dead. The look on her face is the complete opposite of his! The ending with the little troll is especially sad. Still, it's a wonderful movie, and everyone has to see it at least once!

I. 羅馬假日英文影評 在線等

Audrey Hepburn's first big film role cast her as a Princess of country unknown, making a state visit to Rome. Bored of the endless run of openings, dedications and so on, she decides to see something of the city, and runs into American newsman Gregory Peck. He recognises her as the missing Princess and plans to scoop a major interview for his syndicate, with the help of pal Eddie Albert and his hidden camera.

Hepburn is an absolute joy, particularly when her hair is shorn down to the classic urchin cut and she takes a motorcycle ride. Peck, too, is served well by this kind of role, and the romance of the city of Rome helps their relationship to develop ring their 24 hours of freedom. Roman Holiday is one of those rarities which are truly perfect and memorable, a real girly flick with beautiful photography and a sparkling script. Highly recommended, and especially so in the wonderful recent restoration.
